Solar power in Basel: what you should know

Electricity price and grid operator

Basel is supplied by IWB Industrielle Werke Basel. A household using 4,500 kWh a year pays 33.2 ct./kWh excluding VAT in 2026, 35.9 ct. including VAT. That is 5.5 ct. above the Swiss median, exactly the median in the Canton of Basel-City.

Because grid power here costs more than the Swiss average, every kilowatt hour you use from your own roof is worth correspondingly more.

Roofs in Basel

According to the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, the roofs in Basel could deliver around 546 GWh of solar power a year, 3,041 kWh per person. Today 9.0% of it is used, compared with a Swiss average of 12.8%. So a large share of the suitable roofs is still free.

Of the 19,287 residential buildings, 6,799 are single-family homes and 10,931 are apartment buildings. On apartment buildings, solar power can be sold to the residents through a ZEV.

According to MeteoSwiss, hailstones of 3.5 cm are to be expected in Basel about every 50 years. This determines the hail resistance class of the modules.

Subsidies and permit

The federal government pays a one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) of CHF 360 per kW through Pronovo, so CHF 3,600 for a 10 kWp system.

What applies in the Canton of Basel-City for notification, subsidies and tax deduction is on the page Solar installation in the Canton of Basel-City. We register the system and submit the subsidy applications. On request, we pre-finance the subsidies.

43.2% of residential buildings in Basel still heat with oil or gas. Anyone who later switches to a heat pump needs more power and uses more from their own roof.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

What does electricity cost in Basel?

With IWB Industrielle Werke Basel, a household using 4,500 kWh a year pays 33.2 ct./kWh excluding VAT in 2026, 35.9 ct. including VAT (ElCom).

Is a solar system worth it in Basel?

That depends on the roof and on your consumption. As a guide, a 10 kWp system produces around 10,000 kWh a year. If you use 30% of it yourself, you save around CHF 1,000 of grid power a year at the IWB Industrielle Werke Basel tariff. On top come the payment for the power you feed in and a one-off payment of CHF 3,600. At the site visit we calculate with your figures.

Do you come to Basel for a site visit?

Yes. Basel is around 82 km from our location in Zumikon. The site visit is free and with no obligation, and you receive the quote within 72 hours.

Do I need a building permit for a solar system in Basel-City?

For well-integrated systems on roofs in numbered zones (Nummernzonen), agricultural zones and conservation zones (Schonzonen), a notification is enough. Protection zones and heritage-protected buildings need a building application (Baubegehren). We check your address and file the right one.

Does the Canton of Basel-City subsidise photovoltaics?

The canton does not subsidise photovoltaic systems on their own, as the federal government supports them. If you renovate the roof or facade for energy efficiency and fit modules at the same time, you can receive a contribution through the Aktion Solarkraftwerk Basel.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
