What applies to your solar system in Appenzell Innerrhoden

Permit: notification for well-integrated roof systems

Under Art. 18a RPG, sufficiently well-integrated solar systems on roofs in building and agricultural zones do not need a building permit. The Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden provides a notification procedure (Meldeverfahren) for them. It offers a cantonal application and notification form with an information sheet.

A building permit is needed if the system is not on the roof, is not sufficiently well integrated, affects a protected building or lies in a protection zone, for example for townscape or landscape protection. So before the quote we clarify which case applies to your building. After that, we file the documents.

Subsidies in the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden

The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo. Since 1 April 2025 there has been no base amount, and add-on systems under 30 kWp receive CHF 360 per kWp. We file the application. On request, we pre-finance the subsidy.

We did not find any direct cantonal contributions for photovoltaic systems on the canton’s subsidy page. It lists the introductory advisory session on solar energy (Impulsberatung), which costs you CHF 100. If you use the introductory session on renewable heating at the same time, you get it free of charge. We will clarify whether your commune or your energy supplier pays a contribution for your address.

Grid operator and power price

In 2026 the cantonal median is 27.6 ct. per kWh excluding VAT. The Swiss median is 27.7 ct. In four of the five communes, the Feuerschaugemeinde Appenzell (energy and water supply) supplies at 27.6 ct. One commune is supplied by Elektra Walzenhausen at 30.5 ct.

The grid operator pays for the electricity you feed in. The rate differs from one utility to the next, and we calculate with the tariff of your utility.

Altitude and buildings

The canton lies in the Alpine foothills, and in winter snow can lie on the modules. We match the tilt and the mounting structure to this. About a third of residential buildings already have a heat pump. For the roof, at the site visit we check the condition, the structural capacity and the shading. If a roof needs renovating soon, we plan both together. With a heat pump or a battery storage system, your self-consumption rises further.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Do I need a building permit for a solar system in Appenzell Innerrhoden?

For sufficiently well-integrated systems on roofs in building and agricultural zones, a notification is enough. Systems that are not on the roof, systems that are not well integrated, systems on protected buildings and systems in protection zones need a building permit.

Is there a cantonal subsidy for photovoltaics in Appenzell Innerrhoden?

We did not find any direct canton contributions for photovoltaic systems. The canton supports an introductory advisory session on solar energy. For the system itself, the federal one-off payment applies.

How high is the power price in Appenzell Innerrhoden?

In 2026 the cantonal median is 27.6 ct. per kWh excluding VAT, practically the same as the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. The Feuerschaugemeinde Appenzell supplies four of the five communes.

How large does my roof need to be for a solar system?

A system is worthwhile from about 20 m². A single-family home usually has room for 8 to 15 kWp, which is about 40 to 75 m² of module area. We measure how much fits on your roof during the site visit.

How long does it take from enquiry to finished system?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. The installation itself depends on the size of the system; for a single-family home it usually takes about a week. In between come the notification, the grid operator and the delivery of materials.

How long until a solar system has paid for itself?

That depends on the electricity price, self-consumption and the feed-in tariff of your grid operator. In the quote, we calculate the payback with your figures, not with average values.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
