Commercial solar

Photovoltaics for businesses

Businesses have good conditions for solar power: large roofs and consumption that falls in the daytime. If you use the electricity directly in your business, you save the full grid tariff. That is why photovoltaics often pays back faster for commerce, industry and farms than for a home. Whether this applies to you shows in the calculation with your data.

Which businesses?

  • Trades and small business: Workshops, warehouses, offices, garages.
  • Industry: Production, cooling, compressed air, process heat.
  • Farms: Barn roofs, sheds, storage halls, farm shops. The building zone matters here: different rules apply depending on location, and we clarify them in advance.
  • Property and property management: Apartment buildings and commercial properties, with a ZEV (self-consumption community) if you wish.

Self-consumption during the day

The value of a commercial system lies in self-consumption. Electricity you use yourself replaces grid electricity at the full price. Electricity fed into the grid earns only the feed-in tariff.

So what decides it is your load profile: when in the day and the year you need how much electricity. Businesses with cooling, machinery, ventilation or EV chargers in the daytime use the solar power well. For businesses that stand idle at weekends, more flows into the grid on Sundays. A battery or the way the system is sized then helps.

We read out your load profile data from the grid operator or measure it beforehand. With it, we size the system to fit your business, not the largest possible roof area.

Peak loads and commercial storage

Many commercial tariffs include a demand charge: it is based on the highest power you draw in a month. A single peak can determine the bill.

A commercial battery with controls can smooth these peaks. It releases power when the load rises, and charges from solar power or in quiet periods. Whether it pays off depends on your tariff and your profile. We calculate it before you decide. Backup power for critical loads can also be planned in. You will find the basics on storage under battery storage.

Solar, EV chargers and heat pump

A system at a business delivers its full benefit alongside further loads. Company vehicles and visitors charge at an EV charger with solar power, and load management protects the connection. For heating, a heat pump can use the solar power. As a smart-me Partner 2025, we set up the metering for this.

Which system? Flat roof, pitched roof, facade

Roof Typical solution
Flat roof (hall, commercial building) mounted on frames, often east-west for an even daily profile
Pitched roof (barn, shed) on-roof, for new builds also in-roof
Carport, car park, facade additional area, the facade delivers in winter

Before planning, we check structural load, roof build-up, fire protection and the condition of the roof skin. If a renovation is due, we plan the roof and the system together.

Solar systems on farms

Barn roofs, sheds and halls offer large, often well-oriented areas. The electricity is used on the farm: for milking systems, cooling, ventilation, drying or the farm shop. Part of the consumption falls in the morning and evening, so combining the system with a battery often pays off.

Special rules for permits and subsidies apply to agricultural buildings. Depending on the zone, a building permit is needed. We clarify with the commune beforehand what applies to your farm, and for barn roofs we observe the requirements for structural load and fire protection. We also include the roof renovation in the plan, for example with asbestos cement (Eternit) roofs.

Planning without interrupting your business

A business cannot stop for the installation. We agree the schedule, access, storage space for the material and power cuts with you in advance. Work that requires the power to be switched off is scheduled for off-peak hours. On flat roofs we work with fall protection, on halls with a lifting platform or crane. Our own installers do the work, so that you have one fixed contact.

Monitoring and operation

After commissioning, you see yield and consumption in an app and in a web portal. Deviations show up early that way. On request, we handle maintenance and cleaning, see cleaning your solar system for more.

Business, tenants and owners

If the building does not belong to the business, the owner’s consent is needed. We help split the investment and the electricity supply, for example with a self-consumption model between landlord and tenant. You clarify contractual questions with your legal adviser.

Connection and grid operator

For larger systems, the house connection must be able to take the output. The grid operator checks the application and sets conditions for feeding in. Depending on size, metering with a load profile or a grid compatibility check may be needed. We clarify this early, so that the date does not fail because of the application.

If you have several tenants in the building, you can distribute the solar power through a self-consumption community (ZEV). We plan the metering, contracts and billing.

Economic calculation

We calculate with your real figures, not with averages. The calculation includes:

  • Investment and possible subsidies
  • Yield per year and self-consumption share from your load profile
  • Savings compared with drawing from the grid, feed-in tariff for the surplus
  • Maintenance and insurance
  • Payback period and, if wanted, return over the service life

The higher the self-consumption, the shorter the payback. We say so even when a smaller system fits better than a large one.

What does a commercial system cost?

The price per kWp falls as the system gets larger. Roof type, access, cable routes and connection all have an influence. So we give the costs only after the site visit, in a binding quote within 72 hours. If you do not want to buy, we will check financing or contracting as an option for your case on request.

Subsidies

  • Federal government: The one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) from Pronovo also applies to commercial systems. Different rules apply to larger systems than to small ones, and we check the current status.
  • Canton and commune: Some bodies pay additional contributions.
  • Taxes: Investments in solar systems can generally be written off. We recommend clarifying the details with your tax adviser.

Subsidies that we handle for you can be pre-financed on request.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How large a roof does a commercial system need?

A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.

How high is self-consumption in a business?

That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.

Can a solar system reduce peak loads?

In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.

Do I need a building permit?

On roofs in the building zone, a notification is usually enough. For larger systems, protected buildings or agricultural zones, a permit may be needed. We clarify this for your site.

Can I rent the system instead of buying it?

On request, we check whether financing or contracting is an option in your case. It is an option and depends on the project and the partner. Please ask us.

How long does it take to build a commercial system?

Installation takes a few days to weeks, depending on size. Before that come planning, notification and delivery of materials. We schedule the work so that your business keeps running.

What happens if the roof is being renovated?

If a renovation is due, it pays to plan the roof and the solar system together. We coordinate with your roofer so that the modules do not have to be installed twice.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
