Solar installation in the Canton of Basel-Country

What applies to your solar system in the Canton of Basel-Country

Permit: notification to the building inspectorate

Under Art. 18a RPG, sufficiently well-integrated solar systems on roofs in building and agricultural zones do not need a building permit. In the Canton of Basel-Country they are therefore exempt from a permit but must be notified. The notification goes to the building permit authority at least 30 days before the planned installation, using the building inspectorate’s cantonal notification form.

A building permit is needed in historic core zones, protected townscape zones and heritage protection zones, and on cultural or natural monuments of cantonal or national importance. We clarify whether your house lies in such a zone before the quote. We build the 30-day period into the schedule.

Subsidies in the Canton of Basel-Country

The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo. Since 1 April 2025 there has been no base amount, and add-on systems under 30 kWp receive CHF 360 per kWp. We file the application. On request, we pre-finance the subsidy.

The canton does not directly subsidise a photovoltaic system on its own. The Baselbieter Energiepaket pays a bonus if you renovate the roof or facade for energy efficiency and fit modules on the renovated area: CHF 40 per m² of module area on the roof and CHF 120 per m² on the facade, at most CHF 100,000 per application. The application must be submitted before building work starts.

For existing buildings, the investment costs are deductible as property maintenance, according to the tax office’s information sheet.

Grid operator and power price

In 2026 the cantonal median is 32.0 ct. per kWh excluding VAT, and the Swiss median is 27.7 ct. The largest grid operators are EBL with 50 communes (30.2 ct.) and Primeo Netz with 23 communes (32.0 ct.). BKW supplies eight communes (27.7 ct.). What you use yourself during the day replaces electricity at your grid price.

The grid operator pays for the electricity you feed in. The rate differs from one utility to the next, and we calculate with the tariff of your utility.

Building stock in Baselland

Single-family homes dominate in the canton, and over 60% of residential buildings still heat with oil or gas. If you are replacing your heating system, you can plan the solar system together with a heat pump and a battery storage system from the start. This raises self-consumption significantly.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Do I need a building permit for a solar system in the Canton of Basel-Country?

On roofs in building and agricultural zones, a notification at least 30 days before installation is enough. In historic core zones, protected townscape zones and heritage protection zones, and on cultural or natural monuments, a building permit is needed.

Is there a cantonal subsidy for photovoltaics in Baselland?

The canton does not directly subsidise photovoltaics on their own. The Baselbieter Energiepaket pays a bonus if you renovate the roof or facade for energy efficiency and fit modules at the same time. The federal one-off payment comes on top.

Can I deduct a solar system from my taxes in Basel-Country?

For existing buildings, the costs count as property maintenance and are deductible, but not for new builds. This is stated in the tax office's information sheet. We prepare a clear invoice for your tax return.

Which grid operator is responsible in the Canton of Basel-Country?

In most communes it is EBL or Primeo Netz, in some BKW or a small local utility (Elektra). Which utility applies to you depends on your commune. We register the system with them.

How large does my roof need to be for a solar system?

A system is worthwhile from about 20 m². A single-family home usually has room for 8 to 15 kWp, which is about 40 to 75 m² of module area. We measure how much fits on your roof during the site visit.

How long does it take from enquiry to finished system?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. The installation itself depends on the size of the system; for a single-family home it usually takes about a week. In between come the notification, the grid operator and the delivery of materials.

How long until a solar system has paid for itself?

That depends on the electricity price, self-consumption and the feed-in tariff of your grid operator. In the quote, we calculate the payback with your figures, not with average values.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
