ZEV and vZEV in the Canton of Zug
What applies in the Canton of Zug for your ZEV
ZEV, vZEV and LEG in brief
A ZEV (self-consumption community) connects several parties on a plot with a shared solar system. In a vZEV (virtual ZEV), everyone keeps their grid connection, and the solar power is allocated through the grid operator’s metering. The local electricity community (LEG) has existed since 1 January 2026 and also includes neighbours through the public grid.
What applies in the Canton of Zug
Under § 4d of the Zug Energy Act, new buildings generate part of their power themselves. The Energy Ordinance requires an installed output of 10 W per m² of energy reference area, with 30 kW or more never required. Anyone who does not build a system pays a one-off replacement levy of CHF 1,000 per kW of unbuilt output to the commune (Einwohnergemeinde).
One provision matters for apartment buildings: the duty can be met jointly with a ZEV of the plots concerned, but only if the community is formed with newly built or extended systems. We take this into account when sizing the system.
Grid operator and metering
In the Canton of Zug, WWZ supplies ten of the eleven communes. Its website has separate pages for ZEV, vZEV and LEG. For ZEV and vZEV, WWZ says it requires the solar system to provide at least 10% of the connection capacity, smart meters for all consumers and for the production, and the agreement of all those involved. Metering is in quarter-hourly values.
We plan the solar system, meters and contracts so that the WWZ requirements are met. Whether a ZEV, a vZEV or later a LEG makes sense, we clarify at the site visit. For apartment buildings with EV chargers, the solar power can also be used within the community.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Can a ZEV in the Canton of Zug meet the own-power duty?
Yes, but only with newly built or extended systems. The Zug Energy Ordinance allows the duty to be met jointly through a community of the plots concerned. An existing system alone is not enough.
Who does the ZEV billing in the Canton of Zug?
WWZ offers metering and billing for ZEV and vZEV and pays the proceeds from self-consumption to the owners. The tariffs are in the WWZ product sheet. At the site visit we show you which option suits your building.
How long does it take to set up a ZEV in Zug?
WWZ states up to three months from registration to activation. All owners and participants must agree. We prepare the documents so that the application reaches WWZ complete.
Do all tenants have to take part in a ZEV?
No. Anyone who does not want to take part stays with the electricity utility. Participation must be voluntary, and the solar power must not cost more than grid electricity. We set out how this is handled in your building in the concept.
What can the solar power cost in a ZEV?
The internal tariff must be below the grid operator's price for comparable customers. As an industry guide value, a discount of about 20 per cent applies. The rules can change. We check the current status during planning.
Do I need a new solar system for a ZEV?
Usually yes, or at least an extension. Existing systems can often be integrated if the metering and distribution are adapted. We check this during the site visit.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
