ZEV and vZEV in the Canton of Thurgau
What applies in the Canton of Thurgau for your ZEV
ZEV, vZEV and LEG in brief
In a ZEV (self-consumption community), several parties on a plot share the solar power from their own roof. In a vZEV (virtual ZEV), everyone keeps their own connection, and the allocation runs through the grid operator’s metering. The LEG (local electricity community) has been possible since 1 January 2026 and also includes neighbouring plots through the public grid. Which model suits you depends on the building, the connection and the utility.
What applies in the Canton of Thurgau
The Thurgau Energy Act requires new buildings to generate part of the electricity they need themselves, or to save the corresponding amount of energy (§ 8). The Energy Use Ordinance turns this into concrete values: for new buildings, the system in, on or at the building must have an output of at least 30 W per m² of energy reference area (§ 42e). Anyone who generates less own power, or none, must additionally reduce the energy demand for heating, hot water, cooling and ventilation: by 10 kWh/m² and year if below 15 W/m², and by 5 kWh/m² and year at 15 to under 30 W/m² (§ 42f).
In addition, § 4c of the ordinance requires new buildings and major conversions to use the solar potential of suitable roof areas with photovoltaics. Areas with 85% of global irradiation or more count as suitable. Exceptions are possible for technical reasons, for heritage protection or townscape protection reasons, or where costs would be disproportionate. For apartment buildings, a ZEV is the obvious way to use this power in the building.
Grid operator and metering
In the Canton of Thurgau, many small utilities supply their communes. Each utility decides itself which meters and which registration are needed for a ZEV, vZEV or LEG. Federal law and the utility generally require metering that records the consumption of each flat separately. We obtain your utility’s requirements before the quote.
We plan the solar system, meters and contracts from a single source and, for new buildings, align the sizing with the energy certificate. Whether a battery storage system would further increase self-consumption in the building, we calculate with your consumption profile.

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. The more expensive grid power is, the more every kilowatt hour you use from your own roof is worth.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Must I generate solar power on a new building in the Canton of Thurgau?
Yes. The Energy Use Ordinance requires at least 30 W per m² of energy reference area for new buildings. Anyone who wholly or partly does without must reduce the building's energy demand further. We calculate both routes for your project.
Which utility is responsible for my ZEV in the Canton of Thurgau?
The Canton of Thurgau has many small grid operators, and each utility sets registration, meters and billing itself. We ask your utility for its requirements before we prepare the quote.
Can I turn an existing apartment building into a ZEV in the Canton of Thurgau?
Yes, a ZEV is also possible, and voluntary, for existing buildings. This usually needs a new or extended solar system and adapted metering. We clarify this at the site visit.
Do all tenants have to take part in a ZEV?
No. Anyone who does not want to take part stays with the electricity utility. Participation must be voluntary, and the solar power must not cost more than grid electricity. We set out how this is handled in your building in the concept.
What can the solar power cost in a ZEV?
The internal tariff must be below the grid operator's price for comparable customers. As an industry guide value, a discount of about 20 per cent applies. The rules can change. We check the current status during planning.
Do I need a new solar system for a ZEV?
Usually yes, or at least an extension. Existing systems can often be integrated if the metering and distribution are adapted. We check this during the site visit.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
