ZEV and vZEV in the Canton of Aargau

What applies in the Canton of Aargau for ZEV, vZEV and LEG

ZEV, vZEV and LEG in brief

A ZEV (self-consumption community) joins several parties behind one shared grid connection. A vZEV (virtual ZEV) achieves the same when every flat keeps its own connection: the grid operator allocates the solar power through its metering. The LEG (local electricity community) has existed since 1 January 2026. It allows solar power to be shared within a grid area, including between several buildings. At federal level, these models are regulated in the Energy Act (Art. 17 and 18) and in the Energy Ordinance.

All models have this in common: tenants take part voluntarily, and the internal solar power must not cost more than grid power. We set out in the concept how it is billed in practice.

What applies in the Canton of Aargau

We have not found any cantonal rule on ZEV or vZEV, so federal law applies. Whether your new building must have a minimum share of its own power generation is set by cantonal energy law and is checked in the building application with the energy certificate. We clarify this with the commune during planning. A system for a ZEV can usually be combined with such a requirement. We handle the notification of the system to the commune.

Grid operator and metering

In Aargau, the grid operator is most often AEW Energie AG. On its website, under «Strom teilen und verkaufen» (share and sell electricity), it lists the ZEV, the vZEV, the LEG and a virtual local electricity product. For the vZEV and the LEG, AEW describes smart metering systems, and all participants must be connected to the same distribution grid. Before the quote, we ask the grid operator which registration, deadlines and meters your utility requires. In a ZEV with a shared connection, we meter each party separately behind the connection point. This keeps tenant changes simple.

If you want to supply an apartment building in Aargau with solar power, we plan the solar system and metering from a single source and coordinate both with your utility.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Can I set up a vZEV in the Canton of Aargau if every flat has its own connection?

Yes, as long as the grid operator offers the vZEV. AEW has the virtual ZEV in its range and requires all participants to be on the same distribution grid. We check beforehand whether your connections are suitable.

Which grid operator is responsible for a ZEV in Aargau?

It depends on the commune. AEW supplies most communes in Aargau, and there are also Eniwa, IBB and other utilities. We agree the procedure with the utility that supplies your building.

Does the LEG already apply to my neighbourhood in Aargau?

The LEG has been legally possible since 1 January 2026. Whether it can be put into practice for you depends on the grid area and what the utility offers. At the site visit we tell you what is feasible today.

Do all tenants have to take part in a ZEV?

No. Anyone who does not want to take part stays with the electricity utility. Participation must be voluntary, and the solar power must not cost more than grid electricity. We set out how this is handled in your building in the concept.

What can the solar power cost in a ZEV?

The internal tariff must be below the grid operator's price for comparable customers. As an industry guide value, a discount of about 20 per cent applies. The rules can change. We check the current status during planning.

Do I need a new solar system for a ZEV?

Usually yes, or at least an extension. Existing systems can often be integrated if the metering and distribution are adapted. We check this during the site visit.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
