Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: 1,000 kWh per kWp, electricity price 24.8 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Integrated systems receive a higher one-off payment than mounted ones, because the modules form the roof skin. More in our guide How much does a solar system cost?

In-roof solar in the Canton of Zurich
What applies to your solar roof in the Canton of Zurich
Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes
The Canton of Zurich’s guide to solar systems expressly rates the in-roof method positively. On new builds, it is desirable to install solar systems flush with the roof. In areas with townscape protection, it is recommended to build full-surface systems as in-roof systems. On sensitive roof areas that matter for the roofscape, an in-roof system should also be considered for existing buildings. In protected townscapes it can tip the balance of interests in your favour.
For heritage-protected buildings, a different weighing applies. An additive, reversible on-roof system protects the fabric of the roof, while in-roof mounting offers advantages for the appearance in certain cases. In sensitive, highly visible locations, the guide names small-format, tile-height solar tiles or shingles as a good fit. In historic core zones and in townscape and heritage protection areas, a building permit is needed. We clarify in advance with the commune and heritage protection what is possible for your address. With a notification, a period of 30 days starts after the confirmation of receipt, after which you may build unless the commune orders otherwise.
Subsidies
For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. The Canton of Zurich does not subsidise photovoltaics directly. Cities and communes sometimes have their own programmes, whose conditions change. We prepare the applications and can pre-finance the subsidies on request.
Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together
Around 59% of residential buildings in the Canton of Zurich were built before 1980. If you are re-covering the roof, an in-roof system saves the tiles on the covered area. The guide notes that solar systems included in the planning from the start contribute to the character of the house as building-integrated elements. So plan insulation, underlay and modules together, ideally with a heat pump in mind that uses the solar electricity directly.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Is an in-roof system more likely to be approved in a historic core zone in the Canton of Zurich?
In townscape protection areas, the cantonal guide recommends building full-surface solar systems as in-roof systems. A building permit is still needed in historic core zones, and the commune decides case by case.
Does an in-roof system count as sufficiently well adapted in the Canton of Zurich?
According to the guide, the criterion of a maximum build-up height of 20 cm is met by a system structurally integrated into the roof. Other requirements, such as a compact layout and low-reflection modules, still apply.
Is there subsidy money for an in-roof system in the Canton of Zurich?
The canton does not subsidise photovoltaics directly. The federal government pays a higher one-off payment for integrated systems, and some communes have their own programmes. We check the current position for your commune at the quote stage.
Is an in-roof system watertight?
Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.
Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?
Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.
Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?
Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
