In-roof solar in the Canton of Zug
What applies to your solar roof in the Canton of Zug
Solar roofs in historic core zones and townscape protection zones
The Canton of Zug’s information sheet describes in-roof systems as modules fitted flush into the roof skin that replace the rest of the covering. For new builds and roof renovations they are preferred. Townscape protection zones are meant to keep their original character. New elements are possible if they fit in particularly well. Solar systems, including in-roof systems, are therefore generally possible there.
An exception is made for buildings in a prominent location with a characteristic historic roof covering. On listed buildings, reversible on-roof systems complement the building, with dark, low-reflection modules without light-coloured frames in a continuous, rectangular area. In every townscape protection zone you need a building permit. The information sheet recommends discussing the project with the commune and the Office for Heritage Protection and Archaeology (Amt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie) before submitting. We take care of that for you. Compactly arranged, rectangular areas are preferred. In townscape protection zones, systems on flat roofs are usually easier to approve than on pitched roofs.
Subsidies
For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. The cantonal 2026 energy subsidy programme does not subsidise the photovoltaic system directly, but it does have the photovoltaic bonus for thermal insulation of the roof or facade. It is CHF 60 per square metre and requires full-surface coverage. We plan the layout so that it meets this condition.
Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together
Since 2023, new builds in the Canton of Zug must generate part of their electricity needs themselves, usually with photovoltaics. On a new build, the in-roof system can be built into the roof structure from the start. When renovating an older roof, we combine insulation, underlay and modules in one order and submit the subsidy application for you before construction starts. Because the application must arrive before construction starts, we clarify the subsidy before the order.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Are in-roof systems allowed in townscape protection zones in the Canton of Zug?
According to the canton's information sheet, solar systems, including in-roof systems, are generally possible in townscape protection zones. A building permit is always needed there. There are exceptions for prominently located buildings with a characteristic historic roof covering.
When does the Canton of Zug prefer in-roof to an on-roof system?
The information sheet prefers in-roof systems for new builds and roof renovations. For listed buildings, however, the canton prefers reversible on-roof systems with dark, low-reflection modules without light-coloured frames.
Is there a subsidy bonus in the Canton of Zug for solar modules in the roof?
With insulation done at the same time, the 2026 energy subsidy programme pays a photovoltaic bonus of CHF 60 per square metre of insulated building element. For roofs, 50% of the insulated area must be covered. The application must arrive before construction starts.
Is an in-roof system watertight?
Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.
Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?
Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.
Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?
Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
