Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: 1,000 kWh per kWp, electricity price 24.6 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Integrated systems receive a higher one-off payment than mounted ones, because the modules form the roof skin. More in our guide How much does a solar system cost?

In-roof solar in Upper Valais
What applies to your solar roof in Upper Valais
Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes
In Valais, under the building ordinance the permit procedure for sufficiently well-adapted systems is replaced by a notification. It goes to the commune at the latest 30 days before construction starts. In protection zones, for protected buildings and for systems that are not well adapted, a building application is still needed. The 2024 handbook of the commune of Goms points to the many module shapes and colours that can solve almost every case, and shows as an example a communal building in Grimentz covered with solar roof tiles. For natural stone or wooden shingle roofs it recommends a subordinate share of the area, no more than a quarter of the roof area. In townscapes worthy of protection, it is worth looking at outbuildings such as garages or garden sheds.
Subsidies
For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. We did not find a cantonal programme for photovoltaics, and the canton subsidises solar thermal systems through the buildings programme. Some communes or energy suppliers may offer their own contributions. For tax purposes, the canton allows the costs of a photovoltaic system to be deducted as an energy-saving measure. We submit the notification to your commune on paper or digitally through the cantonal platform.
Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together
In Valais, renewing the roof covering triggers an obligation. If the roof covering is removed, a solar system of at least 20 watts per square metre of energy reference area must be installed, and more than 30 kW is not required. The obligation also applies to new builds, with exceptions. This is the moment for an in-roof system, because the modules replace the new covering on the covered area. Exempt are, for example, buildings with GEAK class C after the renovation, with a facade renovation at the same time, or with only the north-facing side re-covered. We check whether your project falls under the obligation.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Do I have to build a solar system in Upper Valais when the roof covering is renewed?
Yes. If the roof covering is removed, Valais requires a solar system of at least 20 watts per square metre of energy reference area. More than 30 kW is not required. There are exceptions, for example for GEAK class C after the renovation (GEAK is the cantonal energy certificate for buildings).
What exceptions are there to the Valais solar obligation for roof renovations?
Exempt are, among others, buildings that reach GEAK class C after the renovation, buildings with an energy-efficiency facade renovation at the same time, buildings where only the north-facing side gets a new covering, and buildings used only in summer.
How much of a natural stone roof may be covered with solar modules in Upper Valais?
For natural stone or wooden shingle roofs, the Goms commune handbook recommends that the system takes up a subordinate share of the roof area, no more than a quarter. It also suggests looking at outbuildings.
Is an in-roof system watertight?
Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.
Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?
Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.
Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?
Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
