In-roof solar in the Canton of Schaffhausen

What applies to your solar roof in the Canton of Schaffhausen

Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes

The Canton of Schaffhausen’s guidelines of December 2025 name the in-roof method in several cases. On new builds it often makes sense to install solar systems flush with the roof or to use modules as facade elements. On sensitive roof areas that matter for the roofscape or public space, an in-roof system should be considered for comprehensive renovations of existing buildings. This applies in particular in protected townscapes, where it can tip the balance of interests in your favour.

The criterion of a maximum build-up height of 20 cm is considered met for a system structurally integrated into the roof. For heritage-protected buildings, the authority checks case by case whether in-roof or on-roof fits better. Both mounting methods have advantages and disadvantages. On the canton’s geoportal, the procedure map shows which procedure applies to your building. We clarify borderline cases with heritage protection. The notification form goes to the commune 30 days before construction starts. Notifications of permit-free solar systems are free of charge. A building permit is always needed on cultural and natural monuments of cantonal or national importance.

Subsidies

For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. The canton does not subsidise the photovoltaic system directly. However, the 2026 energy subsidy programme supports roof insulation with CHF 50 per square metre and pays CHF 30 extra if a solar electricity system is installed on the insulated area. Buildings with a building permit from before 2000 are eligible, and the application must be submitted before construction starts.

Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together

In the Canton of Schaffhausen, 62% of residential buildings were built before 1980. A renovation involves insulation, underlay and covering anyway. With in-roof modules you replace the tiles on the covered area and at the same time meet the condition for the extra contribution. We submit the application for you.

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is an in-roof system preferred in protected townscapes in the Canton of Schaffhausen?

The cantonal guidelines state that an in-roof system in protected townscapes can have a positive effect on the assessment. On sensitive roof areas it should be considered for comprehensive renovations.

How high is the extra contribution for solar electricity with insulation in the Canton of Schaffhausen?

The 2026 energy subsidy programme pays an extra CHF 30 per square metre if a solar electricity system of at least 30 watts per square metre of energy reference area is installed on the subsidised area. The extra contribution is capped at CHF 50,000.

Is an in-roof system an advantage on heritage buildings in the Canton of Schaffhausen?

That depends on the building. For the fabric of the roof, a reversible on-roof system is better, while in-roof mounting can have advantages for the appearance. Heritage protection weighs this up case by case.

Is an in-roof system watertight?

Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.

Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?

Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.

Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?

Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
