In-roof solar in the Canton of Obwalden
What applies to your solar roof in the Canton of Obwalden
Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes
The Canton of Obwalden implements the federal principle in its implementing provisions on solar systems (AB Solar, GDB 710.113). You notify the system before construction work begins, using the notification form at your commune’s building office. A building permit is still needed in protected areas and for protected objects, which the AB Solar lists, and for systems that do not meet the requirements. For such locations the AB Solar sets colour requirements. Modules must be fully black, including the frame, back sheet and cells, or have a colour matched to the roof. Fully black in-roof modules with a black frame meet this requirement. Since 1 July 2024, facade systems in work zones have also been permit-free, provided they comply with the cantonal design rules. Before the quote, we clarify where your house stands in Sarnen, Kerns, Engelberg or another commune.
Subsidies
For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. The canton’s 2026 energy subsidy programme includes contributions for winter-optimised photovoltaic systems, in particular for facade systems. The cantonal government (Regierungsrat) raised the power-based contribution for 2026 because demand in 2025 was modest. The funds are limited, so an early application is worthwhile. For ordinary roof systems, the canton pays no contribution of its own. On tax, the tax administration sets out the deduction for photovoltaics and battery storage in its information sheet on solar systems (as of 1 January 2025).
Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together
In the Canton of Obwalden, a once-in-100-years event means hailstones of up to 4.5 cm. With in-roof systems the modules form the roof covering, so the hail resistance class is an important selection criterion. In the mountain regions, snow load and snow guards are added. For a roof renovation, we plan underlay, modules and connections together with the roofer and plumber.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
What colour does the Canton of Obwalden require for solar modules in protected areas?
The AB Solar requires fully black modules, where all visible parts including the frame, back sheet and cells are black, or a colour matched to the roof. The system must also not disturb the protected object concerned.
Where do I notify a solar roof in the Canton of Obwalden?
With the notification form for solar systems at your commune's building office. You enclose plans, a cross-section and a photo of the roof or facade. If the plot is outside the building zone, the commune passes the notification to the Cantonal Building Coordination Office.
Does the Canton of Obwalden pay contributions for roof systems?
The 2026 subsidy programme includes contributions for winter-optimised photovoltaic systems, in particular on facades. For ordinary roof systems without winter optimisation, the canton pays no contribution of its own.
Is an in-roof system watertight?
Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.
Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?
Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.
Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?
Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
