Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: 1,000 kWh per kWp, electricity price 22.1 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Integrated systems receive a higher one-off payment than mounted ones, because the modules form the roof skin. More in our guide How much does a solar system cost?

In-roof solar in the Canton of Nidwalden
What applies to your solar roof in the Canton of Nidwalden
Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes
In the Canton of Nidwalden, for roofs and facades you use the joint form «Meldung / Gesuch Solaranlagen» (notification / application for solar systems) at your commune. It comes with a site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, detail plans showing the module layout and a system description. A permit is needed in townscape protection zones, including the surroundings protection zone of Wolfenschiessen and the village zone of Stans, in landscape-sensitive settlement areas, on cultural and natural monuments, in ISOS areas with conservation target A and on protected buildings. The systems must then generally be built with dark frames and fixing parts. We did not find a separate in-roof rule in the form. Black-framed or frameless modules meet this requirement.
Subsidies
For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. The canton does not subsidise a photovoltaic system on its own directly, and its 2026 subsidy programme refers to the federal government for solar electricity. It does support insulation, though. If a thermally insulated building element is fully covered with photovoltaics, the amount is CHF 120 instead of CHF 60 per square metre. A roof counts as fully covered when 50% of the area is covered, a facade at 20%. For tax purposes, for buildings held as private assets the costs can be deducted as maintenance under the tax administration’s guideline, if the installation takes place at least one year after the new build.
Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together
Nidwalden has around 2,990 apartment buildings and 2,928 single-family homes. When a roof is being re-covered anyway, we plan insulation, underlay and in-roof modules together. The subsidy requires an application before construction starts, and the building must have been permitted before 2000. We submit the application for you and first check your commune’s zoning plan.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Where does a solar roof in the Canton of Nidwalden need a permit?
In townscape protection zones, in landscape-sensitive settlement areas, on cultural and natural monuments of cantonal or national importance, in ISOS areas with conservation target A and on protected buildings. You then also submit the building application form.
What design does the Canton of Nidwalden require for solar systems that need a permit?
The form names dark frames and dark fixing parts as the rule. The systems must also have a uniform colour and choice of materials and be built with low reflection according to the state of the art.
How much subsidy is there in the Canton of Nidwalden for insulation and photovoltaics?
For a thermally insulated building element combined with full-surface photovoltaics, the canton pays CHF 120 instead of CHF 60 per square metre. For a roof, full-surface means 50% of the area, for a facade 20%. Buildings with a building permit from before 2000 are eligible.
Is an in-roof system watertight?
Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.
Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?
Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.
Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?
Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
