In-roof solar in the Canton of Lucerne

What applies to your solar roof in the Canton of Lucerne

Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes

In the Canton of Lucerne, for roof systems the size decides first. Systems under 20 m² generally do not need to be notified, except in areas with townscape protection and for inventoried buildings worthy of protection. Larger systems are notified to the commune at least 20 days before construction. A building permit is still needed for cultural and natural monuments of cantonal or national importance. The information sheet names the cantonal register of monuments including surroundings protection, and the buildings classed as worthy of protection in the BILU building inventory. The ISOS (inventory of protected Swiss sites) must also be considered. Communal design criteria only apply if they do not restrict the use of solar energy more than federal law does. We also clarify whether your building is classed as worthy of protection in the building inventory. For a building in a village centre, we clarify with the commune and heritage protection which mounting method is possible.

Subsidies

For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. The Canton of Lucerne does not subsidise photovoltaics directly. We check at the quote stage whether your commune or energy supplier contributes anything. For tax purposes, on existing buildings the system has counted among the deductible energy-saving measures since the 2023 tax period.

Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together

In the Canton of Lucerne, a roof renovation brings an obligation with it. Since 1 March 2025, on heated, ventilated, cooled or humidified buildings, the potential for electricity generation must be used appropriately as soon as the renovation affects the covering or the waterproofing. An in-roof system replaces the new covering on the covered area. The information sheet also refers to the guide for building owners on integrated photovoltaics. We prepare the proof in the notification procedure for you and compare in-roof with on-roof.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is there a duty to install a solar system when renovating a roof in the Canton of Lucerne?

Since 1 March 2025, the potential for electricity generation must be used appropriately on new builds and roof renovations. A roof counts as renovated if the work affects the covering or waterproofing.

Where is proof of own electricity generation handled in the Canton of Lucerne?

Proof under EN-204-LU is provided within the existing notification procedure for solar systems, in which no building permit is required. We prepare the documents as well.

When is a building application needed for a solar roof in the Canton of Lucerne?

For cultural and natural monuments of cantonal or national importance, meaning objects in the cantonal register of monuments including their surroundings protection, and buildings worthy of protection in the building inventory. The city of Lucerne has its own procedure.

Is an in-roof system watertight?

Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.

Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?

Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.

Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?

Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
