In-roof solar in the Canton of Graubünden

What applies to your solar roof in Graubünden

Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes

In Graubünden, you notify sufficiently well-adapted roof and facade systems to the commune’s building permit authority with a notification form and self-declaration, at the latest 15 days before installation. The form lists in-roof systems as a separate system type. A building permit is needed in protection zones and on cultural and natural monuments of cantonal or national importance. We clarify in advance whether your house is in a village centre or a protection zone, and we prepare the documents.

In the self-declaration, the owner and the installer confirm that the system and its substructure meet the load requirements of SIA standard 261 for snow and wind. For in-roof systems this is especially important, because the modules are part of the roof covering. On pitched roofs this also applies to the snow guards.

Subsidies

For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. In addition, the canton can subsidise systems with increased winter electricity production. According to the guide, the conditions are a tilt angle of 60 to 90 degrees, at least 3 kWp and an application before construction starts. Raised systems on steep roofs are excluded. We confirm which contribution applies today with the Office for Energy and Transport (Amt für Energie und Verkehr). On tax, the tax administration lists the photovoltaic system among the deductible investments in energy saving and environmental protection, and the costs of a battery storage system are also deductible for existing buildings.

Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together

In Graubünden, 64% of residential buildings date from before 1980. If you are re-covering the roof, it is best to plan underlay, insulation, snow guards and in-roof modules together. The Graubünden building insurance publishes an information sheet on preventing natural hazard damage with solar systems. The hail risk in the canton is low, but snow and wind determine the build-up and fixing.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Does the notification form in Graubünden distinguish between in-roof and on-roof?

Yes. The form lists in-roof system, on-roof system, system next to the building and facade system as separate system types. It must be submitted to the commune's building authority at the latest 15 days before installation.

What does the self-declaration confirm for a solar roof in Graubünden?

The owner and the installer confirm that the system and its substructure meet the load requirements of SIA standard 261 for snow and wind. On pitched roofs this also applies to snow guards.

Do I need a building permit for a solar roof in a protection zone in Graubünden?

Yes. A building permit is needed in protection zones and on cultural or natural monuments of cantonal or national importance, and for systems that do not meet the requirements.

Is an in-roof system watertight?

Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.

Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?

Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.

Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?

Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
