In-roof solar in the Canton of Glarus
What applies to your solar roof in the Canton of Glarus
Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes
In the Canton of Glarus, you notify sufficiently well-adapted solar systems on roofs and facades in writing to your commune’s building authority 30 days before work starts. You enclose a project description, roof plan or elevation plan, section and site plan. Simplified rules have applied since 1 May 2025, and in work zones even systems that are not sufficiently well adapted no longer need a building permit. Systems on cultural objects and in protected townscapes remain excluded. The canton provides working aids and interactive maps, which we use to check in advance for your building whether a notification is enough. The three communes of Glarus, Glarus Nord and Glarus Süd each have their own form for this, which we fill in. The canton names no separate rule for in-roof systems.
Subsidies
For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. In 2026 the canton’s subsidy programme focuses on thermal insulation and replacing heating systems, and has a tilt-angle bonus for photovoltaics. We only name amounts once we can back them up from the current programme. On tax, the canton is clear. The tax administration’s information sheet lists on-roof and in-roof systems, and for existing buildings held as private assets the actual investment costs can be deducted. Electricity for your own use is not taxable, and the amount taxed is the net income generated by the system.
Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together
In the Canton of Glarus, 73% of residential buildings date from before 1980, and 46% heat with oil or gas. Many owners therefore face a roof renovation and a heating replacement at the same time. An in-roof system replaces the tiles on the covered area, and a heat pump uses the electricity directly. In the Glarus valleys, snow and slope shading shape the planning. We check this at the site visit.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
When do I need a building permit for a solar roof in the Canton of Glarus?
For systems on cultural objects and in protected townscapes. Otherwise a written notification 30 days before work starts to the commune's building authority is enough. The canton provides information sheets and interactive maps for a preliminary check.
Are the costs of an in-roof solar system tax-deductible in the Canton of Glarus?
The tax administration's information sheet expressly names on-roof and in-roof systems under the maintenance of existing photovoltaic systems. For the investment in existing buildings held as private assets, the actual costs can be deducted, and public-sector contributions reduce the deduction.
Does the Canton of Glarus subsidise photovoltaics on the roof?
The subsidy programme stays unchanged in 2026 and focuses on thermal insulation and replacing heating systems. For photovoltaics it has a tilt-angle bonus. We clarify the amount with the energy office when we prepare the quote.
Is an in-roof system watertight?
Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.
Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?
Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.
Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?
Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
