- Self-consumed (30%)3,000 kWh
- Grid power saved per yeararound CHF 820
- One-off payment for integrated systemsCHF 4,000
Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: 1,000 kWh per kWp, electricity price 27.3 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Integrated systems receive a higher one-off payment than mounted ones, because the modules form the roof skin. More in our guide How much does a solar system cost?

In-roof solar in German-speaking Fribourg
What applies to your solar roof in German-speaking Fribourg
Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes
The Canton of Fribourg implements the federal rule in its spatial planning and building regulations. You notify sufficiently well-adapted roof systems to the commune at the latest 30 days before work starts. A building permit is still needed on cultural properties and in landscapes of cantonal or national importance. In 2015 the canton issued a guideline on the architectural integration of solar systems. Since the revision of the Spatial Planning Ordinance of 1 July 2022, the new federal text applies directly. Seen from above, installations must not protrude from the roof and must form a coherent whole, although technical exceptions are allowed. A flush-fitted in-roof system meets this geometry easily. Light reflections must also be limited as a precaution, even for systems that need no building permit. A glare tool can be used to model possible glare already during planning. We did not find a separate in-roof rule.
Subsidies
For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. The Canton of Fribourg does not subsidise photovoltaics directly. It supports solar thermal systems. Some communes offer their own programmes. For tax purposes, according to the information sheet, the costs of a photovoltaic system on an existing building can be deducted. Contributions from third parties are taxable as other income.
Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together
The cantonal building insurance advises increasing the hail resistance of the solar system and using the hail register. With in-roof systems the modules form the roof covering, so this is a selection criterion. For a roof renovation, we plan underlay, insulation and modules together with the roofer and plumber. About half of the residential buildings in German-speaking Fribourg already heat with a heat pump, which uses the solar electricity directly.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Does the Canton of Fribourg have a rule on integrating solar systems into the roof?
The canton has a guideline on the architectural integration of solar systems (October 2015). Since the 2022 revision of the spatial planning ordinance, federal law applies directly. Seen from above, systems must not protrude from the roof and must form a coherent whole.
Do I have to notify a solar roof before building in German-speaking Fribourg?
Yes, you notify sufficiently well-adapted systems to the commune at the latest 30 days before work starts (Art. 87 para. 3 RPBR, the cantonal spatial planning and building regulations). A building permit is still needed on cultural properties and in landscapes of cantonal or national importance.
Are the costs of a solar roof tax-deductible in the Canton of Fribourg?
According to the information sheet from the cantonal tax administration, the costs of a photovoltaic system on an existing building can be deducted. No deduction is possible for new builds and building extensions.
Is an in-roof system watertight?
Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.
Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?
Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.
Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?
Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
