In-roof solar in the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden

What applies to your solar roof in the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden

Solar roofs in historic core zones and protected townscapes

In the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, sufficiently well-adapted solar systems on roofs in building zones and agricultural zones only need a notification. All other systems need a permit. This includes systems that are not on the roof or not sufficiently well adapted, as well as systems on protected buildings and in protection zones such as townscape and landscape protection. We did not find a separate cantonal in-roof rule. For a house within a townscape, we therefore clarify before the quote which category it falls into and discuss the design with the responsible office.

Subsidies

For integrated systems, the federal government pays a higher one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo than for add-on systems. We did not find direct cantonal contributions for photovoltaic systems on the canton’s subsidy page. It lists the Impulsberatung Solarenergie (solar energy advice session), which costs you CHF 100 and is free if combined with the Impulsberatung for renewable heating. Applications for cantonal subsidies must be submitted before construction starts. We check at the quote stage whether your commune or energy supplier contributes anything.

Plan the roof renovation and solar roof together

Around 65% of residential buildings date from before 1980. When a new roof covering is due, we compare in-roof and on-roof options side by side at the site visit. We check the condition, structure and shading of the roof. In the Alpine foothills, snow load and snow guards are added to this. With in-roof systems the modules form the roof covering, so we coordinate underlay, connections and schedule with the roofer and plumber before the order is placed. About a third of the residential buildings in the canton already have a heat pump. If you renew roof and heating together, you use the electricity from the modules directly for it.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Do I need a permit for a solar roof in the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden?

For sufficiently well-adapted roof systems in building zones and agricultural zones, a notification is enough. A permit is needed for protected buildings and in protection zones, such as townscape or landscape protection, and for systems that are not sufficiently well adapted.

Is there a cantonal subsidy for in-roof photovoltaics in Appenzell Innerrhoden?

We did not find direct contributions for photovoltaic systems on the subsidy page. It lists the Impulsberatung Solarenergie (solar energy advice session), which costs you CHF 100. Applications for cantonal subsidies must be submitted before construction starts.

Which form applies in Appenzell Innerrhoden for the notification?

The canton provides a joint application and notification form with an information sheet, agreed between the Building and Environment Department and the districts. We fill it in for you.

Is an in-roof system watertight?

Yes, if it is properly planned and installed. Together with flashings and seals, the modules form the water-bearing layer. Underneath, an underlay membrane remains as a second safeguard. Connections at the chimney, ridge and eaves are the critical points. We work with particular care there.

Can I convert my existing roof to in-roof?

Yes, but it only makes sense as part of a roof renovation. The tiles have to come off anyway then. If your roof is still in good condition, an on-roof system is usually the more economical solution. We tell you honestly during the site visit what is worthwhile.

Will an in-roof system be approved in a historic core zone?

Often more readily than an on-roof system, because it looks calmer. For protected buildings and in historic core zones, a permit is required, and the commune decides case by case. We clarify the situation for your address and submit the documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
