Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in the Canton of Zug

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,250

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 21.9 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Zug

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Zug

Permit: building notification, building application and boreholes

For replacing a heating system, you usually submit a building notification (Bauanzeige) to the commune. For air-to-water heat pumps with an outdoor unit, the commune decides whether a building application is also needed. A noise protection assessment is part of it. We clarify this before the quote and submit permit and subsidy applications.

Boreholes (ground probes) need a cantonal permit from the Environment Office. Whether drilling is allowed at your site is shown by the geothermal map. It takes into account groundwater, protection zones, geology and contaminated sites.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

The revised Energy Act of the Canton of Zug has applied since 1 February 2024. Anyone who replaces a fossil heating system must cover at least 20 percent of the heat demand from renewable sources or improve efficiency by that share. Buildings with a Minergie certificate or GEAK class C or better (cantonal energy certificate for buildings) are exempt. A heat pump meets the requirement. Proof is provided through the energy proof submitted with the building notification.

Subsidies in the Canton of Zug

The cantonal Energy Subsidy Programme 2026 supports replacing oil, gas and electric heating:

  • Air-to-water up to 30 kW: CHF 8,500
  • Air-to-water above 30 kW up to 70 kW: CHF 4,000 plus CHF 150 per kW
  • Boreholes up to 70 kW: CHF 20,000 plus CHF 400 per kW

Among other conditions, the heat pump system module (Wärmepumpen-System-Modul) is required up to 15 kW. The application must be submitted before installation starts. Anyone who starts before approval bears the risk. Alternatively there is the federal climate bonus (Klimaprämie), but the two cannot be combined. You can find further options under heat pump and ground-source heat pump.

Grid operator and electricity price

In the Canton of Zug, electricity is supplied mainly by WWZ (10 communes) and the Wasser- und Elektrizitätswerk Steinhausen. The cantonal median is 21.9 ct./kWh excluding VAT, below the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. This lowers the running costs of a heat pump. We register the connection with the grid operator. With your own solar system, you can reduce your electricity purchases further.

A special feature: dense settlement and many oil heating systems

In the Canton of Zug, houses are often close together. For air-to-water units, the installation location and the distance to the neighbour therefore matter. We calculate the sound in advance. Around 36 percent of residential buildings still heat with oil, and almost half of the buildings date from before 1981. During the site visit, we measure the required flow temperature and check whether the existing radiators are sufficient.

Grid operators

Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Zug

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Zug?

For air-to-water heat pumps up to 30 kW, the canton pays CHF 8,500, and above that CHF 4,000 plus CHF 150 per kW. Ground-source (borehole) heat pumps up to 70 kW receive CHF 20,000 plus CHF 400 per kW. The application must be submitted before installation starts, and we submit it for you.

May I drill a borehole in the Canton of Zug?

That depends on the site. The canton's geothermal map shows whether drilling is permitted and with what conditions. The application goes to the Environment Office (Amt für Umwelt), and we handle the submission.

Do I have to notify the replacement of my heating system in the Canton of Zug?

Yes, when a heating system is replaced, you submit a building notification (Bauanzeige) with an energy proof to the commune. A heat pump meets the requirement of 20 percent renewable heat. We prepare the documents.

Is replacing an electric heating system also subsidised in the Canton of Zug?

Yes, the subsidy applies to replacing oil, gas and electric heating with air-to-water or ground-source (borehole) heat pumps. The existing heating system must as a rule have been in operation for at least five years.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
