Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in the Canton of Uri

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,430

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 25.1 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Uri

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Uri

Permit: commune for air-to-water, canton for boreholes

In the Canton of Uri, air-to-water heat pumps are approved by the building authority of your commune, and no cantonal permit is provided for them. A noise protection assessment is usually needed. We prepare it with the application and submit permit and subsidy applications.

For boreholes (ground probes), the Directorate of Construction approves the drilling. A concession is then needed for the use. The application is made as a building application through the online portal. The Uri geoportal shows the permissibility map for borehole drilling. We check it before the quote.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

On 8 March 2026, Uri voters adopted the partial revision of the Energy Act. The new provisions apply from autumn 2026 and are based on the cantons’ model provisions of 2014. Anyone replacing an oil or electric heating system should therefore seek advice before deciding. We clarify with the energy office during the site visit which requirements apply in your case.

Subsidies in the Canton of Uri

The Energie Uri 2026 subsidy programme makes about CHF 2.1 million available. For replacing a heating system, these rates apply up to 70 kW:

  • Air-to-water: CHF 3,000, plus CHF 60 per kW from 20 kW
  • Boreholes: CHF 8,000, plus CHF 180 per kW from 30 kW

Up to 15 kW, the heat pump system module (Wärmepumpen-System-Modul) is mandatory. The application must be submitted in full before installation starts. For boreholes, the start of drilling counts as the start, if it comes before installation. You can find more about the options under heat pump.

Grid operator and electricity price

Most communes are supplied by energieUri (14 communes), alongside the Elektrizitätswerk Ursern, the Elektrizitätswerk Göschenen and the Gemeindewerke Erstfeld. The cantonal median is 25.1 ct./kWh excluding VAT, below the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. The utilities range between 16.4 and 29.4 ct. We register the connection with your grid operator.

A special feature: old houses and mountain locations

About 60 percent of Uri’s residential buildings date from before 1981, and around 31 percent heat with oil. In mountain locations, design for cold winter days plays a big role. During the site visit, we check whether air-to-water or a borehole is the better solution.

Grid operators

Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Uri

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Uri?

Up to 70 kW, an air-to-water heat pump receives CHF 3,000, with CHF 60 per kW added from 20 kW. For boreholes it is CHF 8,000, with CHF 180 per kW added from 30 kW. The application must be submitted before installation starts, and we submit it for you.

Do I need a permit for a borehole in the Canton of Uri?

Yes, drilling is approved by the Directorate of Construction (Baudirektion). The application is made as a building application through the online portal. The Uri geoportal shows in advance whether boreholes are permitted at your site.

What changes in the Canton of Uri with the new Energy Act?

The partial revision was adopted on 8 March 2026 with 75 percent in favour and applies from autumn 2026. We clarify with the energy office during the site visit which requirements apply in your case when a heating system is replaced.

Do I have to submit a building application for an air-to-water heat pump in the Canton of Uri?

The permit goes through the commune, and the canton does not approve air heat pumps itself. A noise protection assessment is usually part of the application, and we prepare it.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
