Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in Upper Valais

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,400

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 24.6 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in Upper Valais

What applies to your heat pump in Upper Valais

Permit: air-to-water and borehole

For air-to-water heat pumps inside the building zone, the communes are responsible. They check whether noise protection is met. If the heat pump replaces an existing heating system, the cantonal Building Ordinance provides for a notification procedure. If the project does not meet the criteria, an ordinary building permit is needed. We prepare the noise assessment and clarify with your commune which procedure applies.

Boreholes (ground probes) need a water protection permit from the Environment Service. Inside the building zone the application goes to the commune, outside it to the Cantonal Building Secretariat. For more than four boreholes per plot or depths over 200 metres, the canton requires a hydrogeological feasibility study.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

The new cantonal energy legislation has applied since 1 January 2025. When an oil or gas boiler is replaced, a heating system using renewable energy is to be installed. A fossil heating system remains possible if the heat demand falls by at least 20 percent or the building reaches GEAK class D. The Energy and Hydropower Service examines such cases in advance. Central electric heating systems must be replaced by renewable systems within 15 years of the law coming into force.

Subsidies in the Canton of Valais

The canton’s Buildings Programme subsidises replacing oil, gas and electric heating with electric heat pumps up to 70 kW. In a single-family home it is CHF 9,000 for air-to-water units and CHF 13,000 for boreholes and water-to-water units. For apartment buildings and other buildings, the canton calculates CHF 45 (air-to-water) or CHF 65 (borehole) per square metre of energy reference area, with a correction factor.

The application is submitted digitally on the Das Gebäudeprogramm platform. Work only starts after the Energy and Hydropower Service has confirmed approval by email. Up to 15 kW, the heat pump system module (Wärmepumpen-System-Modul) is required. We submit permit and subsidy applications.

Grid operator and electricity price

In Upper Valais, several utilities supply the electricity, including EnBAG Netze, RELL, VED Visp Energie Dienste and EVTL in the Lötschental. At 24.6 ct. per kWh, the median of the communes is below the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. (excluding VAT, household category H4, ElCom 2026). We register the heat pump with the grid operator. Blocking times and tariffs differ by utility, and we clarify them in advance.

A special feature

The higher a house lies, the colder it gets in winter. The heat pump must be designed for the lowest outdoor temperatures at the site, and we clarify this during the site visit. The oil share of heating systems in Upper Valais is 35 percent.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in Upper Valais?

In a single-family home, the Canton of Valais pays CHF 9,000 for an air-to-water heat pump and CHF 13,000 for a borehole. For apartment buildings, it is calculated by energy reference area. Approval must be in place before work starts, and we submit the application for you.

Do I have to replace my oil heating system with a renewable one in Upper Valais?

Since 1 January 2025, a renewable heating system is to be installed when an oil or gas boiler is replaced. A fossil heating system remains permitted only if the heat demand falls by at least 20 percent or the building reaches GEAK class D (cantonal energy certificate for buildings).

Do I need a building permit for an air-to-water heat pump in Upper Valais?

If the heat pump replaces an existing heating system, a notification procedure (Meldeverfahren) at the commune may be enough. Otherwise an ordinary building permit is needed. Noise protection is assessed in both cases, and we take care of the documents.

May I drill a borehole in Upper Valais?

Drilling needs a water protection permit from the Environment Service (Dienststelle für Umwelt). The application goes to the commune, or outside the building zone to the Cantonal Building Secretariat. The permissibility map shows whether conditions apply at your site.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
