Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in the Canton of Thurgau

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,680

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 29.4 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Thurgau

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Thurgau

Permit: building application or notification, drilling permit for boreholes

In the Canton of Thurgau, the Grand Council anchored the notification procedure (Meldeverfahren) in the Planning and Building Act on 5 March 2025. It is meant to apply to smaller heat pumps. The ordinance with the details was in consultation until 15 May 2026. Whether your air-to-water heat pump needs a notification or a building application, we clarify with your commune before the quote. A noise protection assessment is part of it in every case.

A borehole (ground probe) needs a drilling permit from the Environment Office. The application goes through the commune. The office distinguishes three suitability zones: white, yellow and red. In white, a permit with standard conditions applies, in yellow with additional conditions, and in red drilling is generally ruled out. ThurGIS shows the zone of your plot. We check it before the quote.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

Anyone who replaces an oil or gas heating system and wants to heat with fossil fuel again must cover part of the heat from renewable sources or save it. Since 1 January 2025, this share is 15 percent, rising to 20 percent from 2030. Well-insulated and newer buildings are exempt. A heat pump meets the requirement in full, so standard solutions and proofs are not needed.

Subsidies in the Canton of Thurgau

The 2026 energy subsidy programme focuses on geothermal heat. Brine-to-water and water-to-water heat pumps up to 70 kW receive CHF 9,000 in a single-family or two-family home, and CHF 16,000 in an apartment building with three or more flats. Anyone who builds a solar power system at the same time receives an additional subsidy for it. The subsidy for air-to-water heat pumps up to 70 kW has been discontinued. The first-time heat distribution system continues to be subsidised when decentralised electric or fossil heating is replaced.

The application must be submitted before work starts, and starting work before the application puts the subsidy at risk. We prepare and submit it for you.

Grid operator and electricity price

The cantonal median is 29.4 ct./kWh excluding VAT, above the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. The utilities differ greatly: the cooperative EW Romanshorn is at 24.9 ct., LST Energie AG at 33.2 ct. and the unified commune of Müllheim at 35.6 ct. The grid operator decides on the tariff and connection conditions. The heat pump is registered through a technical connection application, which we handle. Some utilities have blocking times, and we clarify this for your utility.

A special feature: solar and heat pump together

In Thurgau, 17.1 percent of the roof potential is already used for photovoltaics. If you plan the heat pump together with a solar system, you benefit from the canton’s additional subsidy and cover part of your heating electricity yourself. 51.9 percent of residential buildings are still heated with fossil fuels.

Grid operators

Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Thurgau

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Thurgau?

In the 2026 programme, ground-source and groundwater heat pumps up to 70 kW receive CHF 9,000 in a single-family or two-family home and CHF 16,000 in an apartment building. There is no longer a subsidy for air-to-water heat pumps up to 70 kW, but the new heat distribution system is subsidised.

How much renewable energy does the Canton of Thurgau require when a heating system is replaced?

Anyone who replaces an oil or gas heating system with another fossil one must, since 1 January 2025, cover or save at least 15 percent from renewable sources. From 2030 it is 20 percent. With a heat pump, the requirement is fully met.

May I drill a borehole in the Canton of Thurgau?

That depends on the site. The Environment Office distinguishes three zones, which you can see in the canton's map portal. Every borehole needs a drilling permit, and the commune forwards the application.

Does a notification procedure already apply to heat pumps in the Canton of Thurgau?

It has been provided for by law since the revision of 5 March 2025, and the ordinance was in consultation until May 2026. We clarify with your commune which procedure applies at your address before the quote.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
