  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,730

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 30.4 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Solothurn

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Solothurn

Permit: air-to-water and borehole

For an air-to-water heat pump with an outdoor unit, noise protection is the main concern. The Environment Office recommends assessing the sound early. The basis is the enforcement guide of the Cercle Bruit (Swiss noise abatement association) with the noise protection assessment of the Swiss heat pump association (Fachvereinigung Wärmepumpen Schweiz). We prepare this assessment and clarify with your commune which procedure applies to your plot.

In the Canton of Solothurn, a borehole (ground probe) always needs a permit from the Environment Office. Whether drilling is possible is shown by the online query for ground-source heat boreholes on the canton’s geoportal. During drilling, the canton inspects the work.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

The completely revised Energy Act of the Canton of Solothurn was rejected on 9 February 2025, with about 57.5 percent voting no. A new cantonal obligation to heat with renewables when an oil or gas heating system is replaced has therefore not been introduced. Anyone who has to replace their system anyway can still switch straight away and use the subsidy. We clarify in advance which requirements your commune sets when a heating system is replaced.

Subsidies in the Canton of Solothurn

The canton subsidises replacing oil, gas and electric heating with electrically powered heat pumps. For air-to-water units up to 15 kW, it is CHF 3,550. Between 15 and 70 kW, the canton pays CHF 1,100 plus CHF 150 per kW. Boreholes and water-to-water units up to 70 kW receive CHF 6,000 plus CHF 450 per kW. The subsidy is calculated with at most 50 watts of rated output per square metre of energy reference area.

The application must be submitted before work starts. Up to 15 kW, the canton requires the heat pump system module, and above that the performance guarantee. We submit permit and subsidy applications.

Grid operator and electricity price

In the Canton of Solothurn, several utilities supply the communes, mainly BKW, Primeo Netz, AVAG and Regio Energie Solothurn. At 30.4 ct. per kWh, the cantonal median is above the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. (excluding VAT, household category H4, ElCom 2026). We register the heat pump with the grid operator. Blocking times and tariffs differ by utility, and we clarify them in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Solothurn?

For air-to-water heat pumps up to 15 kW, the canton pays CHF 3,550. Ground-source heat pumps up to 70 kW receive CHF 6,000 plus CHF 450 per kW. The application must be submitted before work starts, and we submit it for you.

May I drill a borehole in the Canton of Solothurn?

In every case, drilling needs a permit from the canton. The online query for ground-source heat boreholes shows whether your plot qualifies. The application goes to the Environment Office (Amt für Umwelt), and we handle the submission.

Do I have to replace an old oil heating system in the Canton of Solothurn?

There is no fixed deadline for replacement. The completely revised Energy Act was rejected at the ballot box on 9 February 2025. During a site visit, we check whether switching is worthwhile for your house.

Which heating systems does the Canton of Solothurn subsidise?

It subsidises replacing oil, gas and electric heating with electrically powered heat pumps. Up to 15 kW, the heat pump system module (Wärmepumpen-System-Modul) is required, and above that the performance guarantee from EnergieSchweiz (SwissEnergy).

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
