Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in the Canton of Schwyz

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,610

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 28.2 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Schwyz

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Schwyz

Permit: notification procedure, simplified procedure and boreholes

The Canton of Schwyz distinguishes by installation location. Air-to-water heat pumps installed indoors are approved under the notification procedure (Meldeverfahren). An outdoor unit inside the building zone goes through the simplified building permit procedure. For this, the written consent of the direct neighbours is needed, otherwise they have 20 days to lodge an objection. Outside the building zone, an ordinary building application is required. In every procedure, a noise protection assessment is part of the application.

Boreholes (ground probes) need a water protection permit from the Office for Environment and Energy. The application is submitted through the commune.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

When the heat generator is replaced in buildings with residential use, the non-renewable share may be at most 90 percent of the demand. Proof is provided through a standard solution, a Minergie certificate or GEAK class D (cantonal energy certificate for buildings). Fixed electric resistance heating may not be newly installed. A heat pump meets the requirement.

Subsidies in the Canton of Schwyz

The 2026 energy subsidy programme applies to existing buildings in which an oil, gas or electric heating system is replaced:

  • Air-to-water up to 70 kW: CHF 3,200 plus CHF 120 per kW
  • Boreholes up to 70 kW: CHF 4,800 plus CHF 360 per kW

The output is counted at no more than 50 watts per square metre of energy reference area. Up to 15 kW, the heat pump system module (Wärmepumpen-System-Modul) is mandatory. The application must be submitted in full before installation starts. For air-to-water units, even dismantling the old heating system counts as the start. We time the process accordingly. You can find more about the systems under air-to-water heat pump and ground-source heat pump.

Grid operator and electricity price

Several utilities supply the Canton of Schwyz, including EWS, ebs and EW Höfe. The cantonal median is 28.2 ct./kWh excluding VAT, and the Swiss median is 27.7 ct. The utilities’ prices vary widely, from 25.1 to 36.9 ct. We register the connection with your grid operator and calculate with its tariff.

A special feature: noise is measured inside the building

Under a ruling of the Schwyz Administrative Court, the nearest noise-sensitive room counts, even in your own building. We therefore plan the installation location and unit with sound calculations. Around 35 percent of residential buildings still heat with oil.

Grid operators

Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Schwyz

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Schwyz?

For air-to-water heat pumps up to 70 kW, the canton pays CHF 3,200 plus CHF 120 per kW of thermal output. For boreholes it is CHF 4,800 plus CHF 360 per kW. The application must be submitted before installation starts, and we handle it for you.

Do I need a building permit for an air-to-water heat pump in the Canton of Schwyz?

Units installed indoors go through the notification procedure. An outdoor unit inside the building zone goes through the simplified building permit procedure, and outside the building zone an ordinary building application is needed. We prepare the noise protection assessment.

May I drill a borehole in the Canton of Schwyz?

Yes, if the site allows it. Boreholes need a water protection permit from the Office for Environment and Energy (Amt für Umwelt und Energie). The application goes through the commune, and we prepare it.

May I replace my oil heating system like for like in the Canton of Schwyz?

Only with additional measures. In residential buildings, the non-renewable share may be at most 90 percent of the demand. With a heat pump, the requirement is met.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
