Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in the Canton of Schaffhausen

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,840

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 32.2 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Schaffhausen

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Schaffhausen

Permit: notification procedure for air-to-water, cantonal permit for boreholes

Since 1 January 2024, a notification procedure (Meldeverfahren) has applied in the Canton of Schaffhausen to most heat pumps. The change affects the Building Ordinance and the Fire Protection Ordinance. Heat pumps inside the building and outdoor air-to-water units up to 2 cubic metres in volume are notified. A permit is still needed if the building is in a protected townscape area or is protected as a heritage building. Even in the notification procedure, the canton requires a noise protection assessment, and the local building authority can pass the project on to the cantonal offices.

For boreholes (ground probes), the notification does not change the canton’s water protection permit. We submit the notification and the application for you and check distances and the site in advance.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

Anyone replacing an oil or gas heating system must, under Art. 42n of the Building Act, use a minimum share of renewable energy. Since 1 January 2024, this share is at least 40 percent, previously it was 20 percent. A heat pump meets the requirement in full. Anyone who stays with fossil fuel needs additional measures and proof.

Subsidies in the Canton of Schaffhausen

The 2026 energy subsidy programme supports replacing oil, gas and electric heating. For a single-family home, it is CHF 3,000 for air-to-water and CHF 10,000 for boreholes. For apartment buildings with three or more flats, CHF 7,000 and CHF 18,000 apply, and for larger outputs, output-based amounts are added. The subsidy is capped at 50 percent of the investment. For a solar power system built at the same time, there is an additional subsidy of at least CHF 3,000. Replacing an electric heating system that already has a water distribution system with an air-to-water heat pump is not supported.

The application must be submitted before installation starts. For systems up to about 15 kW, a heat pump system module (Wärmepumpen-System-Modul) is required. We prepare and submit the application.

Grid operator and electricity price

The cantonal median is 32.2 ct./kWh excluding VAT, clearly above the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. The Elektrizitätswerk des Kantons Schaffhausen supplies 25 of the 26 communes at 32.2 ct., and the city of Schaffhausen is supplied by SH POWER at 30.2 ct. The heat pump is registered with the grid operator through a technical connection application. Some utilities have their own tariffs or blocking times, and we clarify this for your utility.

A special feature: high electricity price, many older buildings

At this electricity price, efficiency and self-generated power have more effect than elsewhere. We design the heating for a low flow temperature and check a suitable solar system. 62.1 percent of residential buildings date from before 1981, and 54.1 percent are still heated with fossil fuels.

Grid operators

Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Schaffhausen

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Do I need a building application for a heat pump in the Canton of Schaffhausen?

For air-to-water heat pumps, a notification is usually enough. This applies to units inside the building and to outdoor units up to 2 cubic metres, except in protected townscape or heritage protection areas. A noise protection assessment is also part of the notification.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Schaffhausen?

In the 2026 programme, a single-family home receives CHF 3,000 for air-to-water and CHF 10,000 for boreholes. Apartment buildings and larger systems receive more. The application must be submitted before installation starts, and we handle it.

How much renewable energy does the Canton of Schaffhausen require when a heating system is replaced?

Anyone replacing a fossil system must, since 1 January 2024, use at least 40 percent renewable energy or save an equivalent amount. A heat pump covers 100 percent of the demand from renewable sources. We show you the comparison during the site visit.

Who approves a borehole in the Canton of Schaffhausen?

The canton issues the water protection permit. You must wait for it, even if the heat pump itself is only notified. We take care of the application.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
