Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 26.5 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Obwalden
What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Obwalden
Permit: air-to-water and borehole
In the Canton of Obwalden, air-to-water heat pumps do not need an environmental permit from the Office for Agriculture and Environment. The noise limits must still be met, and a noise assessment is needed for the outdoor part. Since 1 July 2024, for air heat pumps in buildings outside the building zone, a notification to the commune on the building notification form is enough. We prepare the noise assessment and clarify the procedure with the commune.
Boreholes (ground probes) are approved by the Office for Agriculture and Environment. In groundwater protection zones and groundwater protection areas, no geothermal energy is used. The heat use map shows where drilling is possible.
Replacing your heating system: what the energy regulations require
Obwalden has no Energy Act of its own. The rules are set out in the Building Act and in the implementing provisions on energy use in buildings (GDB 710.112). They have applied since 1 January 2018 and implement the cantons’ model provisions of 2014. We check during the site visit which requirements apply in your case when an oil or gas heating system is replaced.
Subsidies in the Canton of Obwalden
About CHF 2.46 million is available for the energy subsidy programme in 2026. The focus is on replacing large fossil heating systems and fixed electric heating. According to the canton, the funds for systems above 70 kW and for the scrapping bonus for electric heating were used up early. We check the current status before the quote. The application must be submitted through the application portal before work starts. The amounts are given by the 2026 subsidy model, depending on heat pump type and output. More on this under heat pump and air-to-water heat pump.
Grid operator and electricity price
All seven communes are supplied by the Elektrizitätswerk Obwalden. The cantonal median is 26.5 ct./kWh excluding VAT, just below the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. We submit the connection application to the grid operator for you.
A special feature: older buildings and winter
About 58 percent of residential buildings were built before 1981, and around 25 percent heat with oil. For older buildings, we measure the flow temperature during the site visit and check whether the radiators are sufficient. At higher altitudes, we compare air-to-water and borehole. Heat pumps are already widespread in the canton, at 29 percent of buildings.
Grid operators
Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Obwalden
What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Obwalden?
In the 2026 energy subsidy programme, the canton mainly supports replacing fossil heating and fixed electric heating. The amounts depend on the heat pump type and output. We give you the amount in the quote and submit the application before work starts.
Do I need a building permit for an air-to-water heat pump in the Canton of Obwalden?
No permit from the Office for Agriculture and Environment (Amt für Landwirtschaft und Umwelt) is needed, but the noise limits still apply. Since 1 July 2024, units installed indoors outside the building zone are handled with a notification to the commune. We clarify everything else with your commune.
May I drill a borehole in the Canton of Obwalden?
Not in groundwater protection zones or groundwater protection areas. Otherwise the Office for Agriculture and Environment approves the drilling. The canton's heat use map shows which zone applies.
Can I combine the subsidy and the climate bonus in the Canton of Obwalden?
No, the cantonal subsidy and the federal climate bonus (Klimaprämie) exclude each other, because the CO2 effect cannot be counted twice. We calculate both routes.
How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?
The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.
When should I replace my old heating system?
Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.
Do I have to insulate the house first?
Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
