Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in the Canton of Nidwalden

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,260

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 22.1 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Nidwalden

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Nidwalden

Permit: building application at the commune

Air-to-water heat pumps need a permit in the Canton of Nidwalden. The building application goes to the commune. It needs a siting plan, a site and facade plan showing the distance to the nearest receiving point, and the completed noise protection assessment. We prepare the documents and submit permit and subsidy applications.

For boreholes (ground probes), the water protection procedure applies. The application is submitted to the commune together with the building application, and the Environment Office is responsible. An objection period of 20 days applies.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

The revised Energy Act (NG 641.1) has applied since 1 November 2021 and is based on the cantons’ model provisions of 2014. When a heating system is replaced in residential buildings, part of the energy must be renewable. Buildings with a Minergie certificate or GEAK class D are exempt, and everyone else implements a standard solution. Installing a heat pump is such a solution.

Subsidies in the Canton of Nidwalden

The 2026 energy subsidy programme pays the following for replacing oil, gas and electric heating:

  • Air-to-water: CHF 3,200 plus CHF 120 per kW
  • Boreholes and water-to-water: CHF 4,800 plus CHF 360 per kW
  • Replacing decentralised electric and fossil heating: CHF 15,000 up to 250 m² of energy reference area, and CHF 60 per m² above that

The application must be submitted through the application portal before work starts. Combining it with the federal climate bonus (Klimaprämie) is not allowed. You can read more about the systems under heat pump and ground-source heat pump.

Grid operator and electricity price

Ten of the eleven communes are supplied by the Elektrizitätswerk Nidwalden (EWN), and Beckenried has its own municipal utility. The cantonal median is 22.1 ct./kWh excluding VAT, clearly below the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. This makes running a heat pump cheaper. We submit the connection application to the grid operator.

A special feature: many apartment buildings

At 32 percent, Nidwalden has a high share of buildings with a heat pump. Around 35 percent still heat with oil, and more than half of the buildings date from before 1981. In apartment buildings, we plan the output precisely, because the subsidy depends on the heating output.

Grid operators

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Nidwalden?

For air-to-water heat pumps, the canton pays CHF 3,200 plus CHF 120 per kW, and for boreholes CHF 4,800 plus CHF 360 per kW. The application must be submitted before work starts, and we submit it for you.

Do I need a permit for an air-to-water heat pump in the Canton of Nidwalden?

Yes, air-to-water heat pumps need a permit. The building application goes to the commune and includes a siting plan, the distance to the nearest neighbour and the noise protection assessment. We prepare the documents.

May I drill a borehole in the Canton of Nidwalden?

Yes, with a permit. The water protection application is submitted to the commune together with the building application, and the Environment Office (Amt für Umwelt) decides. We prepare both applications.

What does Nidwalden require when an oil heating system is replaced?

The 2021 Energy Act requires that in residential buildings, renewable energy covers part of the demand. A heat pump is one of the standard solutions. Buildings with a Minergie certificate or GEAK class D (cantonal energy certificate for buildings) are exempt.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
