Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in the Canton of Graubünden

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,660

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 29.2 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Graubünden

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Graubünden

Permit: air-to-water and borehole

In the Canton of Graubünden, air-to-water heat pumps are approved by the commune, depending on the case in the building application or the notification procedure (Meldeverfahren). A noise protection assessment is needed in every case. We prepare it and submit permit and subsidy applications.

Boreholes (ground probes) need two permits: the water protection permit from the Office for Nature and Environment and the building permit from the commune. The canton’s geothermal use map shows whether drilling is permitted. In groundwater protection zones it is prohibited. The application goes through the commune on form F-405-01d.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

The partially revised Energy Act (BEG) has applied since 1 January 2021. Replacing a heat generator in existing residential buildings must be notified to the commune on form EN-120. At least 10 percent of the demand must be covered from renewable sources or saved. Exempt are buildings built in 1992 or later, buildings with a Minergie certificate, and buildings in GEAK class D (cantonal energy certificate for buildings). A heat pump meets the requirement.

Subsidies in the Canton of Graubünden

The cantonal programme subsidises heat pumps in existing buildings if they replace an oil, gas or electric resistance heating system and generate at least 75 percent of the heat from renewable sources. The buildings must be older than five years. The subsidy consists of a flat-rate amount up to 250 m² of energy reference area and an area-based amount above that, with a maximum of CHF 200,000 and 50 percent of the costs. We confirm the current rates in the quote.

A special rule applies to air-to-water: the site must have an annual mean temperature above 7.3 °C. At higher altitudes, the borehole is therefore often the subsidised option. Bivalent systems are exempt. The application must be approved before work starts, otherwise the subsidy lapses. You can find more about the systems under ground-source heat pump and air-to-water heat pump.

Grid operator and electricity price

In the Canton of Graubünden, the communes are supplied by Repower (32 communes), the Elektrizitätswerk der Stadt Zürich (8 communes) and Rhiienergie, among others. The cantonal median is 29.2 ct./kWh excluding VAT, above the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. The utilities range between 10.5 and 36.5 ct. We submit the connection application to the grid operator.

A special feature: altitude and winter

Graubünden has 100 communes, many of them in mountain areas. There, outdoor temperatures fall low in winter, and the heating must be designed for this. Almost 64 percent of residential buildings date from before 1981, and around 33 percent heat with oil. During the site visit, we check the site, flow temperature and eligibility for subsidies, and we calculate air-to-water and borehole options.

Grid operators

Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Graubünden

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is an air-to-water heat pump subsidised in the Canton of Graubünden?

Yes, but only at sites with an annual mean temperature above 7.3 °C. This does not apply to bivalent systems, for which a COP of at least 3.1 must be shown. We check your site before the quote.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Graubünden?

There is a flat-rate amount up to 250 m² of energy reference area and an area-based amount above that, with a maximum of CHF 200,000 and 50 percent of the costs. We give you the current rates in the quote. The application must be submitted before work starts.

May I drill a borehole in the Canton of Graubünden?

The canton's geothermal use map shows this. In groundwater protection zones, boreholes are prohibited. A permit from the Office for Nature and Environment (Amt für Natur und Umwelt) and a building permit from the commune are required.

Do I have to notify the replacement of my heating system in the Canton of Graubünden?

Yes, replacing a heat generator in residential buildings must be notified to the commune on form EN-120. Buildings built in 1992 or later are exempt from the renewable energy requirement. We take care of the notification for you.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
