Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in the Canton of Glarus

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,690

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 29.7 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Glarus

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Glarus

Permit: commune and noise protection assessment

Whether an air-to-water heat pump needs a building application in the Canton of Glarus is decided by the commune. The canton has published working aids on the building permit requirement for heat pumps. For outdoor units, a noise protection assessment is part of the application. We clarify the procedure with the commune and submit permit and subsidy applications.

Boreholes (ground probes) are approved by the Environmental Protection and Energy Division. The application goes through the commune. Where there is usable groundwater, boreholes are not permitted.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

The Glarus Energy Act has applied since 2023. Anyone who replaces the heat generator in an existing residential building must install a heat generator without CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, if this is technically possible. A heat pump meets this requirement.

Subsidies in the Canton of Glarus

The cantonal subsidy programme supports replacing oil, gas and electric heating with up to 50 percent of the costs. The 2026 rates for systems below 70 kW:

  • Air-to-water: CHF 4,000
  • Brine-to-water and water-to-water: CHF 6,000 plus CHF 250 per kW of thermal output

The maximum is CHF 100,000 per property. The application must be submitted before work starts. In 2026 the programme remains unchanged, and from 2027 the subsidies are expected to fall. You can find more information under heat pump and air-to-water heat pump.

Grid operator and electricity price

Each of the three communes has its own utility: Technische Betriebe Glarus (29.7 ct./kWh), Technische Betriebe Glarus Nord (32.8 ct.) and Technische Betriebe Glarus Süd (24.3 ct.). The cantonal median is 29.7 ct. excluding VAT, above the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. All prices are excluding VAT. With your own solar system, the heat pump needs less grid electricity.

A special feature: many older buildings

Around 73 percent of Glarus residential buildings date from before 1981, and only just under 17 percent already have a heat pump. About 34 percent heat with oil and 12 percent with gas. In older buildings, we measure the required flow temperature and check whether individual radiators should be replaced.

Grid operators

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Glarus?

Below 70 kW, the canton pays CHF 4,000 for air-to-water heat pumps. For brine-to-water and water-to-water it is CHF 6,000 plus CHF 250 per kW. The application must be submitted before work starts, and we submit it for you.

Do I have to replace an oil heating system with a renewable one in the Canton of Glarus?

In existing buildings with residential use, a heat generator without CO2 emissions from fossil fuels must be installed on replacement, if this is technically possible. A heat pump meets this.

May I drill a borehole in the Canton of Glarus?

With a permit from the Environmental Protection and Energy Division (Abteilung Umweltschutz und Energie). The application goes through the commune. In areas with usable groundwater, boreholes are not permitted, and we check your site in advance.

Will subsidies in the Canton of Glarus fall from 2027?

The canton expects lower subsidies after 2026, because the Confederation plans to cut its funds. In 2026 the rates are unchanged. If you are planning, you should submit an application promptly.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
