Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 27.6 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden
What applies to your heat pump in Appenzell Innerrhoden
Permit: building application for air-to-water, permit for boreholes
In Appenzell Innerrhoden, the Office for the Environment assesses heat pumps in the building permit procedure and sets requirements. For air-to-water heat pumps, a noise protection assessment is mandatory. For this, the canton requires the form of the Swiss heat pump association, which contains the sound levels of many manufacturers. The building application goes to the building administration of the Inneres Land district or, for Oberegg, to the district administration. Whether a simplified procedure is possible, we clarify with the building administration before the quote.
Boreholes (ground probes) need a permit. The borehole map in the geoportal is decisive. In yellow areas, boreholes are permitted, and from a total borehole length of 150 metres a preliminary hydrogeological assessment is needed. In brown areas they are permitted with conditions, and in red areas they are not permitted. We check your site and handle the application.
Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires
When a heating system is replaced in existing residential buildings, the share of non-renewable energy must not exceed 90 percent of the relevant demand. This is met with standard solutions or with substitute measures on the building envelope, for example new windows. For a building in GEAK class D or better (cantonal energy certificate for buildings), replacement is possible without additional measures. A heat pump meets the requirement in full.
Subsidies in Appenzell Innerrhoden
The Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden subsidises energy measures through its own programme, and the contact point is the energy office. With all subsidy bodies, applications must be submitted and approved before execution. We could not verify the 2026 heat pump amounts from official sources, so we do not state any figures. We clarify the amount during the site visit and submit the application for you.
In addition, there is the climate bonus (Klimaprämie) from Energie Zukunft Schweiz for replacing fossil heating systems. Double funding is not allowed, and we check which option brings you more.
Grid operator and electricity price
The cantonal median is 27.6 ct./kWh excluding VAT, practically the Swiss median of 27.7 ct. The Feuerschaugemeinde Appenzell supplies four of the five communes (27.6 ct.), and Elektra Walzenhausen supplies one commune (30.5 ct.). The heat pump is registered with the grid operator through a technical connection application. Some utilities have their own tariffs or blocking times, and we clarify this for your utility.
A special feature: little oil and gas
In the canton, only 32.2 percent of residential buildings are heated with fossil fuels, and 64.2 percent heat with renewables. Where an oil or gas heating system is still in place, switching to a heat pump and a solar system is worthwhile before the next breakdown. 64.5 percent of residential buildings date from before 1981, and for these houses we check the flow temperature of the radiators.
Grid operators
Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden
What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.
| Grid operator | Communes | ct./kWh |
|---|---|---|
| Feuerschaugemeinde Appenzell, Energie- und Wasserversorgung | 4 | 27.6 |
| Elektra Walzenhausen | 1 | 30.5 |

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Do I need a building permit for an air-to-water heat pump in Appenzell Innerrhoden?
The canton assesses heat pumps in the building permit procedure and requires a noise protection assessment on the form of the Swiss heat pump association (Fachvereinigung Wärmepumpen Schweiz). The building application goes to the building administration of your district. We prepare the assessment and submit the application.
May I drill a borehole in Appenzell Innerrhoden?
The borehole map in the geoportal shows yellow, brown and red areas. In red areas, drilling is not permitted, and in yellow and brown areas it is permitted with conditions. The permit and advice come from the Office for the Environment (Amt für Umwelt). We clarify the site before the quote.
What does Appenzell Innerrhoden require when an oil heating system is replaced?
In existing residential buildings, the non-renewable share after replacement must not exceed 90 percent of the relevant demand. This can be met with standard solutions or with GEAK class D or better. A heat pump meets the requirement without additional measures.
Are there subsidies for a heat pump in Appenzell Innerrhoden?
The canton runs a subsidy programme with the energy office as the contact point, and applications must be submitted before execution. We confirm the amount for 2026 during the site visit. We prepare the application and the requests for you.
How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?
The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.
When should I replace my old heating system?
Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.
Do I have to insulate the house first?
Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
