Example: replacing an oil heating system in a single-family home in the Canton of Aargau

  • Heat demand per yeararound 20,000 kWh
  • Heating oil no longer neededaround 2,000 litres
  • Power needed by the heat pumparound 5,700 kWh
  • Cost with grid poweraround CHF 1,580

Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: air-to-water heat pump with a seasonal performance factor of 3.5, around 10 kWh of heat per litre of heating oil, electricity price 27.7 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Power from your own roof lowers the cost, and a ground-source heat pump needs less power. More in our guide How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump in the Canton of Aargau

What applies to your heat pump in the Canton of Aargau

Permit: notification procedure for air-to-water, permit for boreholes

In the Canton of Aargau, air-to-water heat pumps inside the building zone, and in buildings without protected status, can be installed under the notification procedure (Meldeverfahren). The requirements are a noise protection assessment and compliance with the distances set out in Section 49b of the Building Ordinance. If the system is outside the building zone or the house is protected, we clarify with the commune which procedure applies.

For boreholes (ground probes), the canton’s geothermal suitability map applies. Yellow zones allow boreholes. In blue zones only groundwater heat pumps are possible, and in red zones no geothermal use is permitted. The application is prepared with the online tool iEWS and submitted to the commune. We take care of both.

Replacing your heating system: what the Energy Act requires

Since 1 April 2025, replacing a heat generator must be notified under Section 7a of the Energy Act. With a heat pump, the requirements are met automatically. A new oil or gas heating system is only allowed if no more energy-efficient and economically viable heat generator is available. For this, the canton compares annual costs with a 10 percent surcharge. If a fossil system is still installed, 10 percent of the energy consumption in residential buildings must be saved or covered from renewable sources. Anyone with electric heating must have a GEAK Plus (cantonal energy certificate for buildings) prepared within five years.

Subsidies in the Canton of Aargau

When an oil, gas or electric heating system is replaced, the Buildings Programme of the Confederation and the cantons pays CHF 3,000 plus CHF 60 per kW of thermal output for an air-to-water heat pump up to 70 kW. For brine-to-water and water-to-water heat pumps it is CHF 6,000 plus CHF 180 per kW. Up to about 15 kW, the heat pump system module (Wärmepumpen-System-Modul) is mandatory, and the output is counted at no more than 50 watts per square metre of energy reference area.

The application must be submitted through the Buildings Programme’s application portal before work starts. We prepare and submit it for you.

Grid operator and electricity price

The cantonal median is 27.7 ct./kWh excluding VAT, exactly the Swiss median. The largest grid operators are AEW Energie AG with 70 communes (27.9 ct.), Eniwa AG with 15 communes (27.2 ct.) and IBB Strom AG with 7 communes (26.8 ct.). The heat pump is registered with the grid operator through a technical connection application. Some utilities have their own tariffs or blocking times, and we clarify this for your utility.

A special feature: heat networks and district heating zones

Aargau has district heating and municipal energy planning. If your property lies in a district heating zone (Verbundgebiet), the heat pump is in principle not subsidised. Before planning, we look it up in the GIS browser and discuss with you whether a connection or your own heat pump makes more sense. 38.8 percent of residential buildings still heat with oil. With your own solar system, you can cover part of the heat pump’s electricity needs yourself.

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. It sets the running costs of your heat pump. Power from your own roof lowers them, and the more expensive grid power is, the more it saves.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the subsidy for a heat pump in the Canton of Aargau?

Under the Buildings Programme, an air-to-water heat pump up to 70 kW receives CHF 3,000 plus CHF 60 per kW. For ground-source (borehole) systems it is CHF 6,000 plus CHF 180 per kW. The application must be submitted before work starts, and we handle it for you.

Do I have to notify the replacement of my heating system in the Canton of Aargau?

Yes. Since 1 April 2025, replacing the heat generator must be notified. With a heat pump, the requirements of the Energy Act are met without additional measures. We submit the notification for you.

Do I need a permit for a borehole in the Canton of Aargau?

Yes, the application goes through the commune to the canton. The geothermal suitability map in the online tool iEWS shows which drilling depth and which conditions apply. In red zones, geothermal use is not possible.

Is a heat pump in Aargau also subsidised in a district heating area?

If the property lies in a district heating zone (Verbundgebiet) according to the cantonal GIS browser, there is in principle no subsidy for the heat pump. Exceptions are possible, for example with confirmation from the commune. We check this before the quote.

How long does replacing the heating take, from enquiry to commissioning?

The site visit usually takes place within a week, and the quote follows within 72 hours. Depending on permits and delivery times, a few weeks to a few months then pass. Installing an air-to-water heat pump often takes only a few days. With a ground-source heat pump, the drilling comes on top.

When should I replace my old heating system?

Ideally before it fails. Then there is time for planning, permits and the subsidy application. If you only enquire after a breakdown, you have to decide under time pressure. For oil and gas heating from about 20 years old, it is worth asking now.

Do I have to insulate the house first?

Not in every case. What matters is the flow temperature your heating needs. We measure it during the site visit and check whether your existing radiators are sufficient or whether some should be replaced.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
