What applies to your EV charger in the Canton of Solothurn
Connection and permit in the Canton of Solothurn
Under the cantonal building ordinance, electric EV chargers generally need no building permit. Approvals and inspections under electricity law remain reserved. In practice, our qualified electrician registers the wallbox with the grid operator before installation. After installation, inspection and the safety certificate follow. The grid operator may set conditions on power. For new parking spaces or commercial use, we clarify the position with your commune.
Subsidies in the Canton of Solothurn
We have found no cantonal subsidy programme for private EV chargers in 2026. The canton therefore pays no contribution towards a wallbox or basic infrastructure. Individual communes and energy suppliers sometimes offer their own contributions. We check before the quote whether anything exists for your location, and we name only amounts that are documented.
Motor vehicle tax for electric cars
Vehicles with a purely electric drive are exempt from motor vehicle tax in the Canton of Solothurn. This applies today. The canton plans a revision of the motor vehicle tax that is due to come into force on 1 January 2027. Under it, electric vehicles are to be taxed by weight, with a 20% reduction compared with comparable combustion-engine cars. The decision of the Cantonal Council (Kantonsrat) is what counts.
Apartment buildings and condominium ownership
Tenants need the landlord’s consent. In condominium ownership, the owners’ association (STWEG) decides. Basic infrastructure with load management prepares several parking spaces at once. Load management shares the power between all spaces so that the house connection is not overloaded. Wallboxes can then be added one by one as soon as a space needs one. This way, not all parties have to decide at the same time, and the cost of the shared cabling is paid once. More on this under EV charging in underground car parks.
Grid operator and electricity price
In the Canton of Solothurn, the communes are supplied by BKW, Primeo Netz, AVAG and Regio Energie Solothurn, among others. The cantonal median for households is 30.4 centimes per kilowatt-hour, which is 2.7 centimes above the Swiss median of 27.7 centimes. Every kilowatt-hour you charge with your own solar power replaces grid electricity. If you wish, we plan the wallbox together with a solar system.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Is there a subsidy for a wallbox in the Canton of Solothurn?
We have found no cantonal subsidy programme for EV chargers. Contributions from individual communes or energy suppliers are possible. We check for your commune whether a programme exists.
Do I pay motor vehicle tax for an electric car in the Canton of Solothurn?
Not today. Vehicles with a purely electric drive are exempt from motor vehicle tax. From 2027, the canton plans a new system in which electric cars are taxed by weight, with a 20% reduction compared with comparable combustion-engine cars.
Do I need a building permit for the EV charger in the Canton of Solothurn?
Under the cantonal building ordinance, electric EV chargers generally need no building permit. Approvals and inspections under electricity law remain reserved. Distance regulations still apply.
Do I need a three-phase power connection for a wallbox?
An 11 kW wallbox runs on a three-phase connection with 16 amps. Most houses have one. However, it often needs its own supply line and a protective device in the distribution board. We check during the site visit whether your installation is sufficient.
Can I connect the wallbox myself?
No. In Switzerland, only a licensed electrician may carry out the fixed connection. They also issue the safety certificates that the grid operator and the insurer require.
How long does it take to install an EV charger?
With a short cable route, usually half a day to a full day. If we have to run a cable through a wall, garden or garage, it takes longer. We tell you the duration beforehand in the quote.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
