EV charger in the Canton of Schaffhausen

What applies to your EV charger in the Canton of Schaffhausen

Connection and permit in the Canton of Schaffhausen

A wallbox is an electrical installation under the low-voltage installation ordinance (NIV). We register it with the grid operator before installation. The grid operator may set conditions on connection power or load management. After installation, we issue the safety certificate. An EV charger at an existing parking space in a garage or carport usually needs no building permit. For new parking spaces, structural extensions or publicly accessible charging points, a permit may be needed. We clarify this beforehand with your commune.

Subsidies in the Canton of Schaffhausen

The energy subsidy programme 2026 supports the connection of charging infrastructure in apartment buildings and in office and industrial buildings with 25% of the investment costs. The contribution is at least CHF 1,000 per project. The subsidy covers the electrical infrastructure permanently connected to the building, not the EV chargers themselves. The building must have been approved before 2019, and the EV chargers may have at most 22 kW. You must submit the application before implementation starts. There is no cantonal contribution for a single-family home.

Apartment buildings and condominium ownership

In its Energy Ordinance, the Canton of Schaffhausen requires new buildings to be prepared for later charging infrastructure. In existing properties, tenants need the landlord’s consent and, in condominium ownership, the owners’ association (STWEG) decides. We plan the charging infrastructure for all spaces, with load management that shares the power between the vehicles. At the site visit, we record the main distribution board, the cable routes to the underground car park and the connection capacity available. Because the subsidy application must be received before implementation starts, we prepare it with you before building. More on this under EV charging in underground car parks.

Grid operator and electricity price

In the Canton of Schaffhausen, the Elektrizitätswerk des Kantons Schaffhausen supplies 25 of 26 communes, at 32.2 ct./kWh in household profile H4. The cantonal median is also 32.2 ct./kWh and the Swiss median 27.7 ct./kWh (ElCom, the Federal Electricity Commission, 2026, excluding VAT). Grid electricity here is more expensive than the national average. Charging with your own solar power therefore pays off particularly well, because every kilowatt-hour you charge from a solar system replaces grid electricity at this price.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is there a subsidy for a wallbox in the Canton of Schaffhausen?

There is no cantonal contribution for a single wallbox at a single-family home. The canton subsidises the connection of charging infrastructure in apartment buildings with 25% of the investment costs, at least CHF 1,000 per project. The building must have been approved before 2019.

Do I have to submit the subsidy application before building in the Canton of Schaffhausen?

Yes. The application must be submitted before implementation starts. If you build first, you receive no contribution. We prepare the application with you before we install.

Do I need a building permit for the wallbox in the Canton of Schaffhausen?

Usually not for a wallbox at an existing parking space. For new parking spaces, extensions or publicly accessible charging points, we clarify this with your commune.

Must a new building in the Canton of Schaffhausen be prepared for electric cars?

Yes. The Energy Ordinance requires new buildings to be prepared for later charging infrastructure. We advise building owners on what this means for their parking spaces.

Do I need a three-phase power connection for a wallbox?

An 11 kW wallbox runs on a three-phase connection with 16 amps. Most houses have one. However, it often needs its own supply line and a protective device in the distribution board. We check during the site visit whether your installation is sufficient.

Can I connect the wallbox myself?

No. In Switzerland, only a licensed electrician may carry out the fixed connection. They also issue the safety certificates that the grid operator and the insurer require.

How long does it take to install an EV charger?

With a short cable route, usually half a day to a full day. If we have to run a cable through a wall, garden or garage, it takes longer. We tell you the duration beforehand in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
