What applies to your EV charger in the Canton of Obwalden
Connection and permit in the Canton of Obwalden
A wallbox is an electrical installation under the low-voltage installation ordinance. The electrician registers it with the grid operator by means of an installation notice. The grid operator may ask for a connection application and set conditions on power and load management. We handle the registration with our own installers and issue the safety certificate.
Whether you need a building permit for the EV charger depends in the Canton of Obwalden on the commune. For a wallbox at an existing parking space, a permit is usually not needed. For new parking spaces, it is required. We clarify this with your commune before installation.
Subsidies in the Canton of Obwalden
The 2026 subsidy model provides a flat contribution of CHF 2,000 per building connection for charging infrastructure. It covers apartment buildings and office and industrial buildings, and new this year also EV chargers at the workplace. The building must have been approved before 2020. All parking spaces hang on the same grid connection point and share one load management system, and at least one gets an EV charger. Applications must be received before building starts. We know of no cantonal contribution for a wallbox at a single-family home.
Apartment buildings and condominium ownership
Tenants need the landlord’s consent. In condominium ownership, the owners’ association (STWEG) decides. The basic infrastructure, with sub-distribution board, power distribution and load management, is the foundation for all charging points. We plan it so that more spaces can be added later. We prepare a quote that you can present to the property management or the owners’ meeting. Do not count on the subsidy until the canton has confirmed the application. More on this under EV charging in underground car parks.
Grid operator and electricity price
In the Canton of Obwalden, Elektrizitätswerk Obwalden supplies all seven communes. The cantonal median is 26.5 ct./kWh, which is 1.2 centimes below the Swiss median of 27.7 ct./kWh (ElCom, the Federal Electricity Commission, 2026, household profile H4, excluding VAT). Because there is only one supplier, the same tariff applies across the canton, and we calculate the charging costs with this tariff. With a solar system, every kilowatt-hour you charge from your own roof replaces grid electricity.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Is there a subsidy for an EV charger in the Canton of Obwalden?
Yes, for apartment buildings, office buildings and industrial buildings. In 2026, the canton pays a flat CHF 2,000 per building connection if the building was approved before 2020. We know of no contribution for a wallbox at a single-family home. The application must be submitted before building starts.
Do I need a building permit for a wallbox in the Canton of Obwalden?
That depends on the commune. At an existing parking space, a permit is usually not needed. We clarify it with your commune before installation.
What conditions apply to the subsidy in Obwalden?
The parking spaces are fed from the same grid connection point and share one load management system. At least one parking space gets an EV charger. Private and semi-private EV chargers are eligible.
Do I need a three-phase power connection for a wallbox?
An 11 kW wallbox runs on a three-phase connection with 16 amps. Most houses have one. However, it often needs its own supply line and a protective device in the distribution board. We check during the site visit whether your installation is sufficient.
Can I connect the wallbox myself?
No. In Switzerland, only a licensed electrician may carry out the fixed connection. They also issue the safety certificates that the grid operator and the insurer require.
How long does it take to install an EV charger?
With a short cable route, usually half a day to a full day. If we have to run a cable through a wall, garden or garage, it takes longer. We tell you the duration beforehand in the quote.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
