Connection and permit in the Canton of Nidwalden
A wallbox is an electrical installation under the low-voltage installation ordinance. The electrician registers it with the grid operator by means of an installation notice. The grid operator may ask for a connection application and set conditions on power and load management. We handle the registration with our own installers and issue the safety certificate after installation.
In the Canton of Nidwalden, a building permit is not needed in most cases for EV chargers at existing parking spaces of single-family homes and apartment buildings. There are exceptions if the installation has a major impact on the surroundings or access. New parking spaces need a building permit. The commune assesses whether a permit is required, so we clarify each case with it before installation.
Subsidies in the Canton of Nidwalden
The energy subsidy programme 2026 of the Nidwalden energy office supports building envelopes, replacing your heating system, solar thermal systems, new buildings and consultations. EV chargers are not listed. We therefore know of no cantonal contribution. Individual communes or EWN may make their own offers. We check this for your location, and we name no amounts that we cannot back up with a source. As long as no contribution is confirmed, we prepare your quote without a subsidy.
Apartment buildings and condominium ownership
Tenants need the landlord’s consent. In condominium ownership, the owners’ association (STWEG) decides. With around 3,000 apartment buildings, Nidwalden has many buildings where several spaces are retrofitted. Load management shares the power between all spaces so that the house connection does not need to be reinforced. An 11 kW wallbox runs on a three-phase connection with 16 amps. Most houses have one. However, it often needs its own supply line and a protective device in the distribution board. We check during the site visit whether your installation is sufficient.
Can I connect the wallbox myself?
No. In Switzerland, only a licensed electrician may carry out the fixed connection. They also issue the safety certificates that the grid operator and the insurer require.
How long does it take to install an EV charger?
With a short cable route, usually half a day to a full day. If we have to run a cable through a wall, garden or garage, it takes longer. We tell you the duration beforehand in the quote.
