What applies to your EV charger in the Canton of Basel-Country

Connection and permit in the Canton of Basel-Country

We register a wallbox with the grid operator before installation. In Basel-Country this is usually EBL or Primeo. This includes the technical connection application and the installation notice. The grid operator may set conditions on power or load management. A building permit is usually not needed for a private EV charger at an existing parking space. For new parking spaces, outdoor charging posts or commercial use, we clarify the position with your commune.

Subsidies in the Canton of Basel-Country

Since 1 January 2026, the Basel-Country energy package has supported the basic installation that is permanently connected to the building for private charging points. The contribution is CHF 500 per charging point, at most 50% of the investment costs and at most CHF 100,000 per application. The conditions are an existing building with at least three dwellings, at least three equipped parking spaces and load management. The application must be submitted before installation starts. We have found no cantonal programme for single-family homes. We check for contributions from communes and energy suppliers.

Motor vehicle tax for electric cars

For purely electric passenger cars, the Executive Council states a tax reduction of CHF 450. It applies in the year of first registration and in the following three years. The Office for Motor Vehicles (Amt für Motorfahrzeuge) confirms the amount for your vehicle.

Apartment buildings and condominium ownership

Basel-Country has many apartment buildings with garage spaces. Tenants need the landlord’s consent. In condominium ownership, the owners’ association (STWEG) decides. Load management is mandatory for the contribution. It shares the power between all spaces, and more wallboxes can be added later. More on this under EV charging in underground car parks.

Grid operator and electricity price

EBL supplies 50 of the 86 communes, Primeo Netz 23 and BKW 8. The cantonal median for households is 32.0 centimes per kilowatt-hour, which is 4.3 centimes above the Swiss median of 27.7 centimes. If you charge with your own solar power, you replace expensive grid electricity. If you wish, we plan the wallbox together with a solar system.

Frequently asked questions

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is there a subsidy for a wallbox in the Canton of Basel-Country?

The Basel-Country energy package subsidises the basic installation for private charging points in existing apartment buildings with three or more dwellings, with CHF 500 per charging point. We have found no cantonal programme for single-family homes.

Do I pay less motor vehicle tax for an electric car in the Canton of Basel-Country?

According to the Executive Council's announcement, purely electric passenger cars receive a reduction of CHF 450 in the year of first registration and in the following three years. The Office for Motor Vehicles (Amt für Motorfahrzeuge) will tell you the exact amount for your vehicle.

Do I need a building permit for the wallbox in the Canton of Basel-Country?

Usually not for a private wallbox at an existing parking space. A permit may be needed for new parking spaces or commercial use. We clarify this with your commune beforehand.

Do I need a three-phase power connection for a wallbox?

An 11 kW wallbox runs on a three-phase connection with 16 amps. Most houses have one. However, it often needs its own supply line and a protective device in the distribution board. We check during the site visit whether your installation is sufficient.

Can I connect the wallbox myself?

No. In Switzerland, only a licensed electrician may carry out the fixed connection. They also issue the safety certificates that the grid operator and the insurer require.

How long does it take to install an EV charger?

With a short cable route, usually half a day to a full day. If we have to run a cable through a wall, garden or garage, it takes longer. We tell you the duration beforehand in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
