EV charger in the Canton of Basel-City

What applies to your EV charger in Basel-City

Connection and permit in Basel-City

We register a wallbox with the grid operator before installation. In Basel-City this is IWB. This includes the technical connection application and the installation notice. The grid operator may set conditions on connection power or load management. A building permit is usually not needed for a private EV charger at an existing parking space. For new parking spaces, outdoors or for commercial use, we clarify this beforehand with the responsible office.

Subsidies in the Canton of Basel-City

Basel-City subsidises the basic installation for charging points from July 2024 to the end of 2030. The canton covers 60% of the investment costs. The maximum is CHF 1,300 per private parking space and CHF 3,500 for publicly accessible spaces. The subsidy covers cables, distribution and load management from the house connection onwards. The EV charger itself and grid reinforcements are excluded. Single-family homes can also receive contributions. We submit the application for you before we start the installation.

Motor vehicle tax for electric cars

In Basel-City, purely electric passenger cars are taxed on unladen weight only. On top of this comes a 50% reduction for a maximum of 10 years. The reduction applies as long as the share of these vehicles in the vehicle fleet is below 5%.

Apartment buildings and condominium ownership

Basel-City has many apartment buildings with an underground car park or courtyard parking. Tenants need the landlord’s consent. In condominium ownership, the owners’ association (STWEG) decides. The subsidy applies to private parking facilities and covers the basic installation with load management. This shares the power between all spaces. Individual wallboxes can be added later. More on this under EV charging in underground car parks.

Grid operator and electricity price

In Basel-City, IWB supplies all three communes. The cantonal median for households is 33.2 centimes per kilowatt-hour, which is 5.5 centimes above the Swiss median of 27.7 centimes. This makes every kilowatt-hour you generate yourself count. If your roof is suitable, we are happy to plan the wallbox together with a solar system.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is there a subsidy for a wallbox in Basel-City?

Basel-City subsidises the basic installation with 60% of the costs, up to CHF 1,300 per private parking space. The EV charger itself is not eligible. The programme runs from July 2024 to the end of 2030.

Do I pay less motor vehicle tax for an electric car in Basel-City?

Yes. Purely electric passenger cars are taxed on unladen weight only and also get a 50% reduction for a maximum of 10 years. The reduction applies as long as the share of these vehicles in the vehicle fleet is below 5%.

Do I need a building permit for the EV charger in Basel-City?

Usually not for a wallbox at an existing parking space. It is registered with the grid operator, which in Basel-City is IWB. For new parking spaces, we clarify the permit beforehand.

Do I need a three-phase power connection for a wallbox?

An 11 kW wallbox runs on a three-phase connection with 16 amps. Most houses have one. However, it often needs its own supply line and a protective device in the distribution board. We check during the site visit whether your installation is sufficient.

Can I connect the wallbox myself?

No. In Switzerland, only a licensed electrician may carry out the fixed connection. They also issue the safety certificates that the grid operator and the insurer require.

How long does it take to install an EV charger?

With a short cable route, usually half a day to a full day. If we have to run a cable through a wall, garden or garage, it takes longer. We tell you the duration beforehand in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
