Commercial solar in the Canton of Zurich

What applies to businesses with a solar system in the Canton of Zurich

Rules for businesses in the Canton of Zurich

New buildings in the Canton of Zurich must generate part of their electricity themselves. The basis is § 10c of the Energiegesetz. For new commercial, industrial and farm buildings, the solar system is therefore usually part of the planning. We size it so that it meets the requirement and fits your business’s load profile.

For existing buildings, the notification procedure applies: solar systems on roofs that are sufficiently well integrated need no building permit. You notify the project with the cantonal form to the local building office. After the confirmation of receipt, a period of 30 days runs. A permit is still needed in historic core zones and in protected townscape and heritage protection areas. For facade systems, the notification procedure requires single-family homes or buildings up to 11 metres high, which is often decisive for halls and commercial buildings.

Large energy consumers (Grossverbraucher)

Sites that use more than 0.5 GWh of electricity or more than 5 GWh of heat a year count as large consumers. They must analyse their consumption and carry out reasonable measures. There are three routes: the universal target agreement with the federal government, the cantonal target agreement or the energy consumption analysis. Own power from the roof reduces purchases from the grid. Whether it is counted in your target agreement, you discuss with the energy office.

Subsidies and one-off payment

The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo. For commercial systems it is graded by system size. We submit the application and, on request, pre-finance the subsidies. The Canton of Zurich does not subsidise photovoltaics directly. Some cities and communes have their own programmes, which we check when preparing the quote. For the tax treatment in business assets, for example depreciation, your tax adviser can advise you.

Self-consumption in your business

Many businesses with daytime consumption are based in the Canton of Zurich, from workshops to logistics halls. The more solar power you use yourself, the better the system pays off. The calculation with your load profile shows which size makes sense. With a battery storage unit, load peaks can be smoothed out, and with EV chargers company vehicles use the power directly.

Grid operators

Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Zurich

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. The more expensive grid power is, the more every kilowatt hour you use from your own roof is worth.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Must a new building in the Canton of Zurich generate solar power?

Yes, new buildings in the Canton of Zurich must produce part of the electricity they need themselves (§ 10c EnerG). For commercial buildings, we plan the system so that it meets this requirement and fits your consumption.

From when does my business count as a large consumer in the Canton of Zurich?

A site that uses more than 0.5 GWh of electricity or more than 5 GWh of heat a year counts as a large consumer. Duties to carry out an energy analysis then apply. A solar system reduces grid purchases, and you clarify the target agreement (Zielvereinbarung) with the canton.

Is a notification enough for a commercial system in the Canton of Zurich?

For roof systems that are sufficiently well integrated, a notification to the commune is usually enough. In historic core zones and in protected townscape and heritage protection areas, a permit is needed. We clarify this for your site and submit the documents.

How large a roof does a commercial system need?

A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.

How high is self-consumption in a business?

That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.

Can a solar system reduce peak loads?

In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
