Commercial solar in the Canton of Zug

What applies to businesses with a solar system in the Canton of Zug

Rules for businesses in the Canton of Zug

New buildings in the Canton of Zug must generate part of their electricity themselves (§ 4d Energiegesetz, § 8 Verordnung). The capacity is based on the energy reference area and is at least 10 W per m², capped for large buildings. This has applied at ordinance level since 1 January 2023. If you do not build the system, you pay the commune CHF 1,000 per kW not installed, for the promotion of renewable energy. The requirement can be met jointly through a self-consumption community, which is interesting for commercial sites with several buildings, see ZEV.

For existing buildings, the notification procedure applies. You notify the commune where the building stands of roof systems in building and agricultural zones that are sufficiently well integrated with a building notice (Bauanzeige, § 44a PBG). If the authority does not respond within 20 days, building can go ahead. A building permit is needed for facade systems, for monuments and in the area of protected townscape zones. We put the documents together.

Subsidies and one-off payment

The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo, graded by system size. We submit the application and, on request, pre-finance the subsidies. The canton’s 2026 energy subsidy programme does not support the photovoltaic system itself directly. It has a photovoltaic bonus for thermal insulation: CHF 60 per square metre of insulated building element, if the roof or facade is insulated at the same time and fully covered with the system. The application must be submitted before work starts. For depreciation in business assets, your tax adviser can advise you.

Self-consumption in your business

The electricity price in the Canton of Zug is low, so what matters most is the power your business uses itself. We read out your load profile data and size the system accordingly. The share of electric cars in the canton is high. With EV chargers for staff and the vehicle fleet, you use solar power during the day, and a battery storage unit smooths out load peaks.

Grid operators

What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. The more expensive grid power is, the more every kilowatt hour you use from your own roof is worth.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How much solar capacity does the Canton of Zug require for a new commercial building?

At least 10 W per m² of energy reference area. The requirement stays capped for large buildings. If you do not install the system, you pay the commune CHF 1,000 per kW not installed.

Can I meet the own-power duty in the Canton of Zug through a joint scheme?

Yes, the requirement can be met jointly through a self-consumption community (ZEV) of several plots. What that looks like for your site, we work out with you.

How long does the building notice for a commercial system in the Canton of Zug take?

If the commune does not respond within 20 days of receipt and does not require an ordinary procedure, the system can be built. Facades and protected townscape zones need a building permit.

How large a roof does a commercial system need?

A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.

How high is self-consumption in a business?

That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.

Can a solar system reduce peak loads?

In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
