Commercial solar in Upper Valais

What applies to businesses with a solar system in Upper Valais

Rules for businesses in Upper Valais

In the Canton of Valais, for systems that use renewable energy and are sufficiently well integrated, a notification replaces the permit procedure (BauV, SGS 705.100). It goes to your commune at the latest 30 days before work starts. In protection zones and for protected buildings, a building application is still needed.

There is also a cantonal duty to generate electricity. According to the canton’s energy page, new buildings and extensions must generate at least 20 W per m² of energy reference area, at most 30 kW. The same applies when the roof covering is renewed. There are exceptions for small extensions, buildings with only a north side and buildings for seasonal use, among others. Buildings with more than 500 m² of roof area must generate electricity themselves within 25 years of the law coming into force. We clarify with the commune before the quote which rule affects your business.

Subsidies and one-off payment

We did not find a cantonal programme for photovoltaics. The canton subsidises solar thermal systems. The federal one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo applies to your system. From 100 kWp you receive the one-off payment for large systems, below that the one for small systems. Systems without self-consumption between 2 and 150 kWp can receive a high one-off payment. We submit the application. On request, we can pre-finance the subsidy. The guide explains the costs.

For tax purposes, the general depreciation rules apply to business assets. Clarify the details with your tax adviser.

Self-consumption in your business

Many operators work in Upper Valais, for example EnBAG Netze, RELL and Visp Energie Dienste. Commercial tariffs differ from utility to utility, so we calculate with your load profile. Hotels, cable cars, trades and farms often have high consumption in winter. Steeply mounted modules and facades, which also deliver power in snow, then count. We size the substructure and fixings for snow load and wind. More under solar systems for businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Must a new business in Upper Valais generate solar power?

Yes. In Valais, new buildings and extensions must generate electricity on the building. According to the canton, this is at least 20 W per m² of energy reference area, at most 30 kW. There are exceptions for small extensions and individual cases.

What applies in Upper Valais when a commercial roof is renewed?

If the roof covering is replaced, the canton says a solar system of at least 20 W per m² of energy reference area must be installed, at most 30 kW. Exceptions apply, for example, to purely north-facing roofs or a simultaneous facade renovation.

Do I receive a cantonal subsidy for a large photovoltaic system in Upper Valais?

We did not find a cantonal photovoltaic programme; the canton subsidises solar thermal systems. The one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo applies to your system, as the large one-off payment from 100 kWp.

How large a roof does a commercial system need?

A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.

How high is self-consumption in a business?

That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.

Can a solar system reduce peak loads?

In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
