What applies to businesses with a solar system in the Canton of Thurgau
Rules for businesses in the Canton of Thurgau
For new buildings, the cantons’ model provisions provide for own power generation. In the Canton of Thurgau, builders have a choice (§ 8 para. 1bis Energienutzungsgesetz): they generate at least 30 W per m² of energy reference area with photovoltaics, or they meet a limit value for weighted energy demand that is 10 kWh per m² a year lower. The upper limit of 30 kW from the earlier rule no longer applies. New buildings with less than 50 m² of energy reference area are exempt. The canton has no replacement levies.
For businesses, the own-power option often pays off, because the solar power is used in the workshop, stable or cold store anyway. We run through both routes with your building project.
Notification instead of permit
Since September 2025, around 60 percent fewer buildings in the Canton of Thurgau have needed a permit. In the building zone, systems that are sufficiently well integrated and cover 35 m² or more must be notified to the commune. A building permit is needed in ISOS areas with conservation objective A and for individually protected objects. The solar map in ThurGIS shows which case applies to your building.
Subsidies and one-off payment
The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo, graded by system size. We submit the application and, on request, pre-finance the subsidies. The canton’s 2026 energy subsidy programme does not support photovoltaic systems directly. It has a contribution for battery storage, whose quota for 2026 was used up according to the programme. For depreciation in business assets, your tax adviser can advise you.
Self-consumption in farming and commerce
Thurgau has many large roofs on farms and in commercial zones. If you need power during the day for a milking system, cooling or machinery, you use a large share directly. We read out your load profile data and size the system accordingly. A battery storage unit lowers load peaks, and an EV charger supplies company vehicles with your own power.
Grid operators
Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Thurgau
What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. The more expensive grid power is, the more every kilowatt hour you use from your own roof is worth.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Must a new commercial building in the Canton of Thurgau have a solar system?
Builders choose: either own power generation of 30 W per m² of energy reference area, or they come in 10 kWh/m² a year below the limit value for energy demand. New buildings under 50 m² of energy reference area are exempt.
How do I check in the Canton of Thurgau whether my hall can be notified?
The solar map in ThurGIS shows building by building whether a permit is needed. That now affects only around 10 percent of buildings. For your address, we check the map at the site visit.
Does the Canton of Thurgau subsidise commercial systems?
The canton does not subsidise photovoltaic systems directly. You receive the federal one-off payment (Einmalvergütung), graded by system size. We submit the application and check whether your commune offers anything on top.
How large a roof does a commercial system need?
A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.
How high is self-consumption in a business?
That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.
Can a solar system reduce peak loads?
In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
