Commercial solar in the Canton of Solothurn

What applies to businesses with a solar system in the Canton of Solothurn

Rules for businesses in the Canton of Solothurn

For solar systems on roofs in building and agricultural zones that are sufficiently well integrated, the notification procedure under Art. 18a RPG also applies in the Canton of Solothurn. The cantonal form of the Building and Justice Department goes, with a building description and plans, to the building administration of your commune at the latest 30 days before work starts. The commune checks the documents and also informs the Solothurn cantonal building insurance (Solothurnische Gebäudeversicherung). We fill in the form for you.

There is currently no cantonal solar duty for new buildings. The revised energy law, which provided for partial own-power generation at new buildings, was rejected by voters on 9 February 2025. Whether a commune sets its own requirements in the zoning plan or in a special land-use plan, we clarify at the site visit.

Subsidies and one-off payment

The cantonal subsidy programme names the building envelope, wood heating, heat pumps, solar thermal systems, heating networks and Minergie. Photovoltaics is not on the list. For your system, the federal one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo is therefore what counts. From 100 kWp the one-off payment for large systems applies, below that the one for small systems. If you do not use any of the electricity yourself and build between 2 and 150 kWp, you can receive a high one-off payment. We calculate which option suits your business. Subsidies can be pre-financed on request. You will find details on the cost structure in the guide.

For tax purposes, the general depreciation rules apply to business assets. Clarify the details with your tax adviser.

Self-consumption in your business

In the canton, businesses are supplied by BKW, Primeo Netz, AVAG and Regio Energie Solothurn, among others. The commercial tariff differs from utility to utility, so we read out your load profile and size the system for daytime consumption. Commerce, industry and farming benefit when machinery, cooling or ventilation run during the day. A battery storage unit can dampen load peaks. Further basics are under solar systems for businesses.

Grid operators

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Do I need a building permit in the Canton of Solothurn for a commercial system?

On roofs in building and agricultural zones, a notification is usually enough. You submit the cantonal form with plans to the building administration at least 30 days before work starts. In protected areas, a building application may be needed.

Is there a solar duty for businesses in the Canton of Solothurn?

A duty for new buildings to generate part of their electricity themselves was part of the revised energy law. Voters rejected it on 9 February 2025. Whether your commune sets its own requirements, we clarify for you.

Do I get a contribution in the Canton of Solothurn for a large solar system?

The cantonal subsidy programme does not list photovoltaics. That leaves the federal one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo, as the large one-off payment from 100 kWp. We submit the application and check offers from the communes and utilities.

How large a roof does a commercial system need?

A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.

How high is self-consumption in a business?

That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.

Can a solar system reduce peak loads?

In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
