Commercial solar in the Canton of Schaffhausen
What applies to businesses with a solar system in the Canton of Schaffhausen
Rules for businesses in the Canton of Schaffhausen
Since 1 January 2026, a new energy law has applied in the Canton of Schaffhausen. Two points matter for commerce and industry. New buildings with energy reference area must install a solar power system of at least 30 W per m² of energy reference area. For new buildings without energy reference area, such as halls and warehouses, from 150 m² of countable building area and with sufficient global radiation, at least 60 percent of the roof area must be covered. For comprehensive roof renovations from 300 m², the roof area must be used for own power. A transition period applies until 31 December 2026.
Businesses with large amounts of waste heat, more than 2 GWh unused per year, have additional duties. For new buildings with large waste heat, the solar potential must be used for power generation.
Notification instead of building permit
Roof systems in building and agricultural zones that are sufficiently well integrated are permit-free, and since 2026 so are sufficiently well integrated facade systems. They are notified to the commune where the building stands, at least 30 days before work starts. On cultural and natural monuments of cantonal or national importance, a building permit is always needed. We check beforehand which procedure applies to your building.
Subsidies and one-off payment
The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo, graded by system size. We submit the application and, on request, pre-finance the subsidies. The canton’s 2026 energy subsidy programme does not support photovoltaic systems directly. It subsidises stationary battery storage of 10 kWh usable capacity or more with a one-off CHF 1,000, at most 25 percent of the investment, and the application must be submitted before installation starts. For depreciation in business assets, your tax adviser can advise you.
Self-consumption in your business
Electricity is comparatively expensive in the Canton of Schaffhausen. Every kilowatt-hour your business uses itself replaces grid power at the full tariff. We size the system to your load profile. With a battery storage unit you shift midday power into the evening and smooth out load peaks.
Grid operators
Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Schaffhausen
What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. The more expensive grid power is, the more every kilowatt hour you use from your own roof is worth.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Which solar requirements apply in the Canton of Schaffhausen to new buildings without heating?
For new buildings without energy reference area, such as warehouses, the following applies from 150 m² of countable building area: with sufficient global radiation, the solar potential must be used and at least 60 percent of the roof area covered.
When must I plan for solar power in a roof renovation in the Canton of Schaffhausen?
For a comprehensive renovation of the roof skin from 300 m² of countable building area, the roof area must be used for own power production. The new law provides a transition period until 31 December 2026.
Notification or permit for a commercial system in the Canton of Schaffhausen?
You notify the commune where the building stands of systems on roofs and, since 2026, also on facades, that are sufficiently well integrated. The notification must be in 30 days before work starts. We prepare the form.
How large a roof does a commercial system need?
A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.
How high is self-consumption in a business?
That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.
Can a solar system reduce peak loads?
In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
