Commercial solar in the Canton of Obwalden

What applies to businesses with a solar system in Obwalden

Rules for businesses in Obwalden

Obwalden implements Art. 18a RPG in its implementing provisions on solar systems (AB Solar, GDB 710.113). Before building work starts, you notify the system with the notification form to the building office of your commune, with plans, a cross-section and a photo of the roof or facade. If the plot lies outside the building zone, the commune forwards the notification to the cantonal building coordination office (Kantonale Baukoordination).

One rule is particularly useful for businesses. Since 1 July 2024, facade systems in work zones are also permit-free, provided they comply with the cantonal design rules. A building permit is still needed in protected areas and for protected buildings, which the AB Solar lists. We could not confirm a cantonal solar duty for commercial buildings. We clarify this with your commune.

Subsidies and one-off payment

The canton’s 2026 energy subsidy programme supports winter-optimised photovoltaic systems, especially facade systems. It also pays contributions to EV chargers in apartment, office and industrial buildings. Funds are limited, so an early application pays off. We read out the contribution amounts from the current subsidy model when preparing the quote.

The federal one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo comes on top. From 100 kWp the one-off payment for large systems applies, below that the one for small systems. Systems between 2 and 150 kWp without self-consumption can receive a high one-off payment. We submit the applications. On request, we pre-finance the subsidies. The guide explains the costs.

Self-consumption in your business

The Elektrizitätswerk Obwalden supplies all seven communes, so a single tariff applies across the canton. We read out your load profile and size the system for daytime consumption. For businesses with machinery, cooling or ventilation, high self-consumption pays off. A facade system delivers power in winter, when a roof system produces less because of snow or low sun. With an EV charger you use the solar power for company vehicles. More under solar systems for businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Do I need a building permit in Obwalden for a commercial system?

For systems in building and agricultural zones that are sufficiently well integrated, you notify the commune's building office with the notification form. Since 1 July 2024, facade systems in work zones are also permit-free if they comply with the design rules.

What does the Canton of Obwalden subsidise for photovoltaics in businesses?

The 2026 energy subsidy programme names contributions for winter-optimised photovoltaic systems, especially facade systems. There is also an offer for EV chargers in office and industrial buildings. We read out the contributions from the current subsidy model when preparing the quote.

Which one-off payment does a large system receive in Obwalden?

Systems of 100 kWp or more receive the one-off payment for large systems through Pronovo. We submit the application and work out which option suits your business best.

How large a roof does a commercial system need?

A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.

How high is self-consumption in a business?

That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.

Can a solar system reduce peak loads?

In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
