Commercial solar in the Canton of Nidwalden

What applies to businesses with a solar system in Nidwalden

Rules for businesses in Nidwalden

The Canton of Nidwalden has a joint notification / application form for solar systems, based on § 40 no. 5 PBV. It applies to roofs and facades and goes to the responsible commune. Enclosed are a site plan, floor plans, facades, sections, detail plans with the module layout and a description of the system.

A building application is also needed in protected townscape zones, in landscape-sensitive settlement areas, on cultural and natural monuments of cantonal or national importance, in ISOS areas with conservation objective A and for protected buildings. The modules must then generally be fitted with dark frames. We could not confirm a cantonal solar duty for commercial buildings. We check the zoning plan and requirements before the quote.

Subsidies and one-off payment

For solar power, the 2026 energy subsidy programme refers to the federal government. However, the canton pays CHF 120 instead of CHF 60 per m² for a thermally insulated building element combined with photovoltaics that covers it fully. For a facade, fully covered means 20 percent of the area, and for a roof 50 percent. Buildings with a building permit year before 2000 are eligible, and the application must be submitted before work starts. For older halls with insulation coming up, this can be interesting.

The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo. From 100 kWp the one-off payment for large systems applies, below that the one for small systems. Systems between 2 and 150 kWp without self-consumption can receive a high one-off payment. We submit the applications. The guide explains the costs. For tax purposes, the general depreciation rules apply to business assets. Clarify this with your tax adviser.

Self-consumption in your business

The Kantonales Elektrizitätswerk Nidwalden supplies ten of the eleven communes, and in Beckenried the municipal utility supplies. We read out your load profile and size the system for daytime consumption. High self-consumption is the goal in commerce, industry and farming, for example with cooling, machinery or ventilation. A battery storage unit or an EV charger raises it further. More under solar systems for businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Do I need to submit a building application in Nidwalden for a commercial system?

For roofs and facades there is a joint notification / application form for the commune. In protected townscape zones, on cultural and natural monuments, in ISOS areas with conservation objective A and for protected buildings, a building application is also needed.

Is there a subsidy for photovoltaics in businesses in Nidwalden?

The canton does not subsidise a stand-alone photovoltaic system. If you insulate a building element and cover it fully with photovoltaics, you receive CHF 120 instead of CHF 60 per m². Buildings with a building permit year before 2000 are eligible.

Which one-off payment does a large system receive in Nidwalden?

Systems of 100 kWp or more receive the one-off payment for large systems through Pronovo. We submit the application and check which option suits your business.

How large a roof does a commercial system need?

A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.

How high is self-consumption in a business?

That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.

Can a solar system reduce peak loads?

In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
