Commercial solar in the Canton of Lucerne

What applies to businesses with a solar system in the Canton of Lucerne

Rules for businesses in the Canton of Lucerne

Since 1 March 2025, the Lucerne Energiegesetz has required every new building to cover part of its electricity needs itself. The same applies when the roof covering or sealing is renovated, as the canton describes in its enforcement guidance. For halls, workshops and farm buildings, this means planning the system in from the start. The exact limit values are set out by the Department of Environment and Energy in its enforcement guidance, and we check them for your project.

In the permit procedure, area matters. Systems under 20 m² generally do not need to be notified, except in areas with protected townscape and on inventoried buildings worthy of protection. Larger systems are notified to your commune at least 20 days before construction (§ 54 PBV). Cultural and natural monuments of cantonal or national importance need a building application. We handle the notification and documents.

Subsidies and one-off payment

The Canton of Lucerne does not subsidise photovoltaics directly. The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo. From 100 kWp the one-off payment for large systems applies, below that the one for small systems. Systems between 2 and 150 kWp without self-consumption can receive a high one-off payment. We submit the application. On request, we can pre-finance the subsidy. For costs, see the guide.

For tax purposes, the general depreciation rules apply to business assets. Clarify the details with your tax adviser.

Self-consumption in your business

In 70 of the 79 communes, CKW supplies the electricity, and small utilities cover the rest. We read out your load profile from the grid operator and size the system for daytime consumption. Commerce, industry and farming use solar power directly for cooling, machinery, milking systems or ventilation. A battery storage unit can cap peaks, and an EV charger puts the power into the company vehicle. More under solar systems for businesses.

Grid operators

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Must a new commercial building in the Canton of Lucerne generate electricity?

Yes. The Energiegesetz requires every new building to cover part of its electricity needs itself, in force since 1 March 2025. Generation in, on or at the building is therefore mandatory. We clarify the technical details during planning.

From what size must I notify a commercial system in the Canton of Lucerne?

Systems under 20 m² generally do not need to be notified. Larger systems are notified to the commune with the notification form, at least 20 days before construction (§ 54 PBV). A commercial system is almost always above that.

Does the Canton of Lucerne subsidise large photovoltaic systems for businesses?

The Canton of Lucerne does not subsidise photovoltaics directly. The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo, as the large one-off payment from 100 kWp. We submit the application and check offers from the communes and the utility.

How large a roof does a commercial system need?

A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.

How high is self-consumption in a business?

That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.

Can a solar system reduce peak loads?

In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
