Commercial solar in the Canton of Glarus
What applies to businesses with a solar system in the Canton of Glarus
Rules for businesses in the Canton of Glarus
The Canton of Glarus simplified the rules for solar systems on 1 May 2025. In work zones, even solar systems that are not sufficiently well integrated no longer need a building permit. For businesses in commercial and industrial zones, this is a clear advantage. Systems on cultural objects and in protected townscapes remain excluded.
Solar systems on roofs and facades in building and agricultural zones that are sufficiently well integrated are in any case permit-free under Art. 18a RPG. You notify the building authority of your commune in writing at least 30 days before construction actually starts. You must enclose a project description, a roof plan or elevation plan, a section and a site plan. The three Glarus communes each have their own form. The canton provides information sheets and interactive maps, which we use to check in advance whether a notification is enough for your building.
For new buildings, requirements for solar or self-generated electricity may apply, depending on size and use. During planning we clarify which rule applies to your project. We give no information on duties for large consumers that we cannot back up.
Subsidies and one-off payment
The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo, graded by system size. We submit the application and, on request, pre-finance the subsidies. The canton’s subsidy programme remains unchanged in 2026 and focuses on thermal insulation and replacing heating systems. For photovoltaics it has a tilt-angle bonus. We will only name the amount once we can back it up from the current programme. The tax administration has an information sheet on the taxation of PV systems. Systems in business assets are subject to their own rules, on which your tax adviser should advise you.
Self-consumption in your business
Businesses in Glarus are often located in narrow valleys, where shading plays a role. At the site visit we check the roof, structure and shading. In Glarus Nord electricity costs more than in Glarus Süd, so each kilowatt-hour you use yourself saves correspondingly more there. We size the system to your load profile. A battery storage unit lowers load peaks.
Grid operators
Electricity prices 2026 in the Canton of Glarus
What power from the grid costs is set by your grid operator. The more expensive grid power is, the more every kilowatt hour you use from your own roof is worth.Swiss median: 27.7 ct./kWh.
| Commune | Grid operator | ct./kWh |
|---|---|---|
| Glarus Nord | Technische Betriebe Glarus Nord (TBGN) | 32.8 |
| Glarus | Technische Betriebe Glarus | 29.7 |
| Glarus Süd | Technische Betriebe Glarus Süd | 24.3 |

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Do I need a building permit in the Canton of Glarus for a system on a factory hall?
Not in work zones, even if the system is not sufficiently well integrated. Since 1 May 2025, a notification is enough there. Cultural objects and protected townscapes remain excluded.
When do I notify the commune of a commercial system in the Canton of Glarus?
In writing, 30 days before construction actually starts, to the building authority. Glarus, Glarus Nord and Glarus Süd each have their own form. We prepare the notification with all enclosures.
Does the Canton of Glarus pay towards a photovoltaic system for businesses?
The 2026 subsidy programme focuses on thermal insulation and replacing heating systems, and has a tilt-angle bonus for photovoltaics. We clarify the amount with the energy office when preparing the quote. The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung).
How large a roof does a commercial system need?
A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.
How high is self-consumption in a business?
That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.
Can a solar system reduce peak loads?
In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
