Commercial solar in the Canton of Basel-Country

What applies to businesses with a solar system in Basel-Country

Rules for businesses in Basel-Country

In the Canton of Basel-Country, solar systems on roofs in building and agricultural zones that are sufficiently well integrated need no permit, but must be notified. The notification is made with the cantonal notification form and goes to the building permit authority at least 30 days before the planned installation. A building permit is still needed in historic core zones, protected townscape zones and heritage protection zones, and on cultural or natural monuments of cantonal or national importance.

This applies to commercial halls and industrial buildings as well as to stables and barns. Before the quote we check the zone of your plot and build the 30-day deadline into the construction schedule. We could not confirm a cantonal solar duty for commercial buildings. We clarify with your commune (Gemeinde) whether any requirements apply to your project.

Subsidies and one-off payment

The canton does not directly subsidise a stand-alone photovoltaic system. The Baselbieter Energiepaket pays a bonus if you renovate the roof or facade for energy efficiency and mount modules on the renovated area. It is CHF 40 per m² on the roof and CHF 120 per m² on the facade, at most CHF 100,000 per application. The application must be submitted before work starts. The subsidy page describes residential buildings. How far this applies to commercial buildings, we clarify case by case.

The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung) through Pronovo. From 100 kWp the one-off payment for large systems applies, below that the one for small systems. We check the option and submit the application. For costs, see the guide. For tax purposes, the general depreciation rules apply to business assets. Clarify this with your tax adviser.

Self-consumption in your business

The largest grid operators are EBL and Primeo Netz, and in some communes also BKW. The commercial tariff depends on the utility. We read out your load profile and size the system for daytime consumption. Businesses with cooling, machinery or compressed air use a lot of solar power directly. With EV chargers for company vehicles, self-consumption rises further. More on this under solar systems for businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Where do I register a commercial system in Basel-Country?

Roof systems that are sufficiently well integrated need no permit, but must be notified. You send the cantonal notification form to the building permit authority at least 30 days before installation. We handle the notification for you.

Does Basel-Country subsidise photovoltaics for businesses?

The canton does not subsidise a stand-alone photovoltaic system. The Energiepaket (energy package) pays a bonus when a roof or facade is renovated for energy efficiency and modules go on the renovated area. We check whether your commercial building meets the conditions.

Which one-off payment does a large system receive in Basel-Country?

Systems of 100 kWp or more receive the one-off payment for large systems through Pronovo. We submit the application and calculate the option that suits your business best.

How large a roof does a commercial system need?

A rule of thumb: each kWp needs around 5 to 6 m² of module area. Commercial systems often start at 30 kWp and go well beyond. We measure what fits on your roof at the site visit.

How high is self-consumption in a business?

That depends on the business. If you work during the day, you often use a large share of the solar power directly. Businesses with cooling, machinery or ventilation in the daytime usually do better than offices. We read out your load profile data for this.

Can a solar system reduce peak loads?

In part. Solar power peaks at midday, but demand peaks can also occur in the morning or evening. A commercial battery with controls can cut peaks. We calculate beforehand whether that brings anything under your tariff.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
