Guide value, not a quote. Assumptions: 10,000 kWh yield, battery around 10 kWh, electricity price 24.8 ct./kWh excluding VAT. Deduct the feed-in tariff you would otherwise have received for this power. Whether a battery pays off, we calculate with your consumption. More in our guide How much does a solar system cost?

Battery storage in the Canton of Zurich
What applies to your battery storage in the Canton of Zurich
Subsidies for battery storage in the Canton of Zurich
The Canton of Zurich does not subsidise photovoltaics directly. The federal one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) is handled by Pronovo. The same applies to battery storage: the cantonal energy subsidy scheme explicitly excludes it. The canton points out that some cities and communes run additional programmes. These change often and are sometimes used up quickly. We check the current position when preparing your quote and, where possible, submit the application.
Registration and fire protection
The battery is registered with the grid operator together with the solar system. In 131 Zurich communes this is EKZ, and there are smaller utilities such as Energie Uster. The installation is carried out by a licensed electrical installation company, including the inspection. The 2015 fire protection regulations of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) do not explicitly cover battery storage. The state of the art is the paper on the VKF fire protection guideline for solar systems, which also clarifies where battery storage may be installed. At the site visit we agree a suitable room with you, for example a utility room or the cellar.
When a battery pays off in the Canton of Zurich
Electricity prices in the Canton of Zurich are below the Swiss median. Each kilowatt-hour you use yourself therefore saves a little less than in cantons with expensive electricity. A battery pays off mainly if you use a lot of electricity in the evening and at night, for example with a heat pump, an electric car or a home office. The feed-in tariff differs from utility to utility. We calculate with the tariff of your grid operator and show you whether a solar system on its own or with a battery suits your household better. Backup power can be included if you want to keep important appliances running during a power cut.
How large the battery should be depends on your consumption profile. As a rule of thumb, allow about 1 kWh of capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. We read your consumption from your electricity bills and, if you have one, from your smart meter data. A heat pump or an electric car changes the demand considerably, and we include that in the calculation.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Is there subsidy money for a battery in the Canton of Zurich?
The Canton of Zurich explicitly excludes battery storage from its subsidies. Some cities and communes run their own programmes. We check for your address whether a contribution is possible.
Where is my battery registered with the grid operator in the Canton of Zurich?
With the grid operator of your commune. In most Zurich communes this is EKZ. The registration is made together with the solar system, and we handle it for you.
When does a battery pay off at Zurich electricity prices?
That depends on your evening consumption and on your utility's feed-in tariff. We calculate the quote with and without a battery side by side, so you can see the extra cost and the additional self-consumption.
How large does the battery storage need to be?
As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.
Is a battery financially worthwhile?
That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.
How long does a battery last?
Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
