Subsidies for battery storage in the Canton of Uri
The Energie Uri 2026 programme subsidises photovoltaics for winter electricity (measure UR-06) with a flat amount and an amount per kWp if the modules are tilted at 60 to 90 degrees, so mainly on facades. We find no subsidy for battery storage in the documents. Whether a commune or utility supports batteries, we check when preparing the quote. We only name amounts if we can document them.
Registration and fire protection
The battery is registered with the grid operator. In the Canton of Uri, energieUri supplies 14 communes, and there are also the Elektrizitätswerk Ursern, the Elektrizitätswerk Göschenen and the Gemeindewerke Erstfeld. The 2015 fire protection regulations of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) do not explicitly cover battery storage. The state of the art is the paper on the VKF fire protection guideline for solar systems, which also clarifies where battery storage may be installed. When a battery pays off in the Canton of Uri
The Canton of Uri lies in an Alpine valley. In winter less sun reaches the roofs, and snow can cover modules. A battery therefore fills mainly in the summer half-year. Facade systems producing winter electricity complement this, because they use the low winter sun. Electricity prices in the canton are below the Swiss median, so each kilowatt-hour you use yourself saves less than in expensive cantons. We calculate the solar system with and without a battery side by side, using your utility’s feed-in tariff. If you want to keep important appliances running during power cuts, you can include backup power.
We set the battery size based on your consumption in the evening and at night. For single-family homes, 8 to 15 kWh of usable capacity usually makes sense. We read your electricity bills and, if you have one, your smart meter data. At the site visit we check the roof or facade, shading from the mountains and the space for the battery.

Does the Canton of Uri subsidise battery storage?
We find no subsidy for battery storage in the documents for the Energie Uri 2026 subsidy programme. It subsidises photovoltaics for winter electricity with steep modules. We only name amounts for batteries if we can document them.
Does a battery make sense in the Canton of Uri with facade systems?
Facade systems produce relatively a lot of electricity in winter, but at midday not always when you need it. A battery can shift the electricity into the evening. We work this out when preparing the quote.
Which utility receives the battery notification in the Canton of Uri?
In 14 communes it is energieUri, in the Urseren valley the Elektrizitätswerk Ursern, in Erstfeld the Gemeindewerke. We register the battery with the solar system.
How large does the battery storage need to be?
As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.
Is a battery financially worthwhile?
That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.
How long does a battery last?
Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.
